Password and sign-in help

I forgot my Yahoo password or username

If you forget your Yahoo password or username (also known as your Yahoo ID, or Yahoo email address), use Sign-in Helper to get back in to your account.

  1. Go to the Sign-in Helper.
  2. Enter one of the account recovery items listed.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Follow the instructions given in the Sign-in Helper.

I want to change my password

From a desktop or mobile web browser:

  1. Sign in to the Yahoo Account security page.
  2. Click Change password.
  3. Enter a new password.
  4. Click Continue.

From most Yahoo mobile apps:

  1. Tap the Menu icon Image of the side menu icon..
  2. If using the Yahoo Mail app, tap Manage Accounts.
  3. Tap Account info.
  4. Tap Security settings.
  5. Enter your security code.
  6. Tap Change password.
  7. Tap I would rather change my password.
  8. Enter the new password and its confirmation and tap Continue.

  If these steps don't work in your app, change your password using your mobile browser.

I get an "Invalid ID or Password" error

This error message means that the password and Yahoo ID combination you entered doesn't match what we have on record. Consider the following:

My Yahoo account is locked

To protect your account, it may be temporarily locked after too many unsuccessful attempts to sign in. It will unlock automatically after 12 hours, but you can always regain access immediately using the Sign-in Helper.

If you've been asked to verify your identity multiple times, our system may have detected a threat to your account. When this happens, we may temporarily lock access to protect your information. Below are reasons why your account might be repeatedly locked:

  • Our system detected a risk to your password.
  • Your IP address is hidden or constantly changing.
  • Login attempts are occurring from different geographic locations in a short period of time.

If your account is affected, be sure to secure your account and update your recovery information.

Account Key help

I'd like to set up Account Key to sign in without a password

Tired of remembering and managing multiple passwords? Account Key is more secure and lets you use your mobile phone instead of a password to sign in. Once enabled, Yahoo sends a notification to the mobile device of your choice. You can approve access with a tap on your phone, so no one else can get into your account.

You must have at least one Yahoo app installed on your mobile device and be signed in to it.

  1. Using a desktop web browser, go to the Yahoo Account security page.
  2. Click or tap See how it works.
  3. Select your device and app to be notified on.
  4. Click or tap Send me a notification.
    - A notification will go to the app you selected.
  5. On your mobile device, tap the Approve icon Image of the Account Key accept button..
  6. Back in your web browser, click or tap Always use Yahoo Account Key.
  7. Confirm your mobile phone number, which is used if you lose access to your device.

Sign in with Account Key

For Account Key to work, you must be signed into a Yahoo app on your mobile device.

  1. Go to the Yahoo Sign in page.
  2. Enter your Yahoo ID, then click Next.
    - A notification is sent to your Account Key enabled device.
  3. On your device, tap the notification or open the app and tap the Account Key icon Image of the Account Key icon..
  4. Tap the Approve icon Image of the Account Key accept button..
  5. You might be prompted to either enter or tap a verification code to confirm.

Disable Account Key or manage devices

You can turn off Account Key and switch back to a password, if you prefer. Or, if you're using multiple devices and Yahoo apps, you can change where the notification is sent.

Disable Account Key from a web browser

  1. Go to the Yahoo Account security page.
  2. By "Yahoo Account Key," click Manage.
  3. Click Disable Account Key at the bottom of the screen to switch back to a password.
  4. Optionally, click the toggle to the right of any device you want to turn on or off.

Disable Account Key from a Yahoo mobile app

  1. From your Account Key enabled app, tap the Menu icon Image of the side menu icon.. In some apps, like the Yahoo Mail app, you'll need to tap your profile icon instead.
  2. Tap the Account Key icon Image of the Account Key icon..
  3. Tap Manage Account Key.
  4. Tap Disable Account Key at the bottom of the screen to switch back to a password.
  5. Optionally, tap the toggle to the right of any device you want to turn on or off.

I'm not receiving an Account Key

Try the following first:

Still not getting an Account Key:

  1. Go to the Yahoo sign-in page.
  2. Enter your email address, then click Next.
  3. Click Use text or email to sign in or Try another way to sign in.
  4. Enter the missing digits of your phone number, then click Submit.
  5. If you have access to this phone, click Yes, text me a verification code.
  6. Don't have access? You'll get the option to verify your alternate email address instead.
  7. Tap or enter a verification code to confirm.
  8. Click Continue to access your account.

Set up a new phone or number to receive Account Key

Set up a new phone:

  1. Install the Yahoo Mail app.
  2. Open the app and tap Sign in.
  3. On the sign-in page, enter your username and tap Continue.
  4. View the notification sent to your old phone.
  5. On your new phone, confirm the code and tap Sign in.

Can't access my old phone:

Use a desktop computer to send the Account Key to your alternate email.

  1. Go to the Yahoo sign in page.
  2. Enter your email address | Click Next.
  3. Click I don't have access to this phone and you'll see your alternate email.
  4. If the email is correct, click Yes, text me a verification code.

If you're not using your old phone again, sign out of the Yahoo app that you were using.

Set up a new phone number:

If you get a new phone number but keep using the same phone, follow the steps below.

  1. Sign in to your Account info page and click your existing number.
  2. Click Add recovery phone number.
  3. Enter your new phone number.
  4. Click Send SMS.
  5. Tap or enter a verification code to confirm.
  6. Click Verify.

Find and remove unusual activity on your Yahoo account

Monitoring your recent login activity can help you find out if your account has been accessed by unauthorized users. Be aware that there are some legitimate reasons why your history can show unfamiliar locations, such as your mobile device detecting the wrong location or Internet provider using a proxy server.

Access your account's recent activity

From a desktop or mobile browser: Sign in and visit the Recent activity page.

From most Yahoo mobile apps:

  1. Tap the Menu icon Image of the side menu icon..
  2. If using the Yahoo Mail app, tap Manage Accounts.
  3. Tap Account info.
  4. Tap Recent activity.

If these steps don't work in your app, access the Recent Activity page from your mobile browser.

Review the entries and remove suspicious activity

Depending on how you access your account, there can be up to 3 sections. If you see something you don't recognize, click Sign out or Remove next to it, then immediately change your password.

  • Recent activity - Devices or browsers that recently signed in. Select one to view available IP addresses.
  • Apps connected to your account - Apps you've given permission to access your info.
  • Recent account access changes - Shows the last 3 password changes.

Recognize a hacked Yahoo Mail account

Signs of a hacked account

Review your Yahoo Mail settings

Hackers may change the settings in your Yahoo Mail account to disrupt your inbox or get copies of your emails. Access your mail settings and make sure none of your info or preferences were changed without your knowledge. Things to look for include:

  • Email filters
  • Sending name
  • Email signature
  • Reply-to address
  • Vacation response
  • Send-only address
  • Blocked addresses
  • Default sending address
  • Auto-forwarding address

  If you think your account has been hacked - Immediately create a new password and secure your Yahoo Mail account.

Compose and send emails in Yahoo Mail for desktop

Personalize the emails you send in Yahoo Mail. Choose what you want to say and how you want to say it by customizing the email and font options for all your messages.

Create and send a new email

  1. Click Compose.
  2. In the "To" field, type the name or email address of your contact.
  3. In the "Subject" field, type a brief summary of the email.
  4. Type your message in the body of the email.
  5. Click Send.

Use the formatting toolbar

The formatting toolbar lets you change the font, color, and style of your text. From the compose screen, Just mouse over each icon to learn what it does.

Set the default font

  1. Click Settings Image of the Settings icon..
  2. Click More Settings.
  3. Click Writing email.
  4. Under "Default rich-text font", select the font size and style you want.
    - Your selection will automatically save.

Compose and send emails in the Yahoo Mail app for iOS and Android

Whether you want to write something new or respond to something someone sent you, the Yahoo Mail app lets you compose emails when the timing is right for you, no matter where you are.

  1. Tap the Compose icon.
  2. Add contacts in the "To" field.
    - Tap the arrow by CC/BCC to add additional contacts.
  3. Enter a short description in the "Subject" field.
  4. Enter your message in the body.
  5. Optionally, attach photos, files, or GIFs to your email.
  6. Tap Send.

IMAP settings for Yahoo Mail

IMAP is the best way to connect your Yahoo Mail account to a desktop mail client or mobile app. It allows 2-way syncing, which means everything you do remotely is reflected in your Yahoo Mail account no matter where or how you access it. Here are the settings you'll need to configure your mail client or app.

POP settings for Yahoo Mail

POP (Post Office Protocol) is one way to get Yahoo Mail in a desktop or mobile app. POP downloads copies of your email, so you can move and delete them in the app without affecting the original emails.

Discontinue POP access

To discontinue POP access, remove your Yahoo Mail account's POP settings from the app you're using. You don't need to make any changes in your Yahoo Mail account.

Manage spam and mailing lists in Yahoo Mail for desktop

Getting unwanted emails or spam is frustrating. We automatically filter suspected spam messages, but if you're still getting overwhelmed with emails mark them as spam or unsubscribe from mailing lists.

Mark emails as Spam

  1. Select the spam email.
  2. Click Spam.

Mark emails as Not Spam

  1. Click the Spam folder.
    -If you don't see the "Spam" folder, click More below the "Sent" folder.
  2. Select the email.
  3. Click Not Spam at the top of the page.
    -The email will return to your Inbox.

Unsubscribe from mailing lists

At the bottom of any subscription based email there is an option to unsubscribe. If you're not sure the email is legit, mark it as spam.

Tips to avoid spam in the future

  • Don't reply to unknown senders.
  • Be careful who you give your email address to.
  • Never reply to email subscriptions asking to be removed.
  • Don't sign up with sites that claim to remove your email from spam lists. While some are legitimate, many are address collectors used by spammers.

Manage spam and mailing lists in the Yahoo Mail app for iOS and Android

If your inbox is getting cluttered with spam and junk mail (mailing lists and retail ads), you can use these helpful tips to help get your inbox back under control.

Filter out spam

Spam is irrelevant, inappropriate, or malicious email. Our spam filters try to keep spam out of your Inbox, but they don't catch everything. Flag an email as spam to help train the filter.

  1. Tap an email to open it or select multiple emails.
  2. Tap the More icon Image of the More icon. (iOS) or Image of the More icon. (Android).
  3. Tap Mark as spam Image of the Spam icon..

Unsubscribe from mailing lists and retail ads

When you enter your email address on someone's website, you may unknowingly subscribe to their mailing list. You can often unsubscribe from their mailings within the email.

  1. Tap an email to open it.
  2. Tap the More icon Image of the More icon. (iOS) or Image of the More icon. (Android).
  3. Tap Unsubscribe.

If there's no unsubscribe option, you can flag the message as spam or try using the subscriptions tab.

  1. From your inbox view, tap the More icon Image of the More icon. (iOS) or Image of the More icon. (Android).
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Under the mailing list you to unsubscribe from, tap Unsubscribe.

Emails aren't received in Yahoo Mail

Not getting the emails you expect is frustrating. Use these steps to identify if there's an issue with your account or the sender's account that's preventing the messages from arriving.

Check if your account has any errors

Sign in to your Yahoo Mail account on a computer and send yourself an email.

  • If you get an error - address that to fix the issue.
  • If you don't get an error - your account is working as expected.

Check your account settings

These settings can prevent email from getting to your Inbox:

Have the sender check their account

If you didn't find anything wrong with your account, then the issue is on the sender's side.

  • Make sure they entered your full email address correctly.
  • Suggest they contact their email provider for further assistance.

Subscription, billing, and payment help

Update your payment information or payment method

If your credit card expired, the number changed, or you want to add a new payment method or delete an existing one, you can do that on the My Subscriptions page.

Update or change your payment information

  1. Sign in to My Subscriptions.
  2. Under the subscription you want to change, click Manage.
  3. Click Change Payment.
  4. Choose Edit payment method to update your existing card payment or click Add credit or debit card to enter a different card.
  5. Enter your info and click Submit.

Delete your payment method

To delete your debit or credit card info, you first need to cancel all your subscriptions in My Subscriptions.

  1. Sign in to My Subscriptions.
  2. Mouse over My Wallet | Click Payment Method.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click OK.

View your billing statement

Your billing statement for most subscriptions can be viewed from your My Subscriptions page.

  1. Sign in to My Subscriptions.
  2. Hover over My Wallet | Click View My Bill.
  3. Select the date you want to see.

Cancel a subscription

Most subscriptions can be managed and canceled from your My Subscriptions page.

  1. Sign in to My Subscriptions.
  2. Under the subscription you want to cancel, click Manage.
  3. Click Cancel.
  4. Select a reason for your cancellation.
  5. Click Cancel my subscription.
