Emails are delayed or not received at all

Sometimes emails you expect can be delayed, or not appear in your Yahoo Mail account as expected. Here are several reasons why this can happen.

Not receiving email

Yahoo Mail settings like filters and auto-forwarding, and incorrectly addressed emails, can result in delivery issues.

+The email could be in your Spam folder

Check your Spam folder for the missing email. If you find it, move it to your Inbox.

  1. Click Spam in the Left Navigation column.
  2. Open an email or select one or more emails.
  3. Click Not Spam.
    - The email(s) will be moved to your Inbox and flagged as a trusted source.

Marking email as Spam or Not Spam trains SpamGuard to filter spam messages you define.

Good to know: Filters take priority over SpamGuard. Create a filter to ensure your mail arrives where you want it!

+The sender could be blocked

Check your blocked address list to determine if the sender's address is on it.

+The email could be filtered

Check your filters to determine if an erroneous filter is sending the message to another folder.

+Mail Forwarding could be enabled

If this is enabled, all of your incoming messages could be sent to another email address with nothing being saved in your Yahoo Mail Inbox.

Check your Mail Forwarding settings to make sure it's not enabled.

+Reply-to address could be wrong

The Reply-to address defines what email address a recipient replies to when they click Reply. Check your settings:

  1. Mouse over the Settings menu icon Small gear icon | select Settings.
  2. Click Edit next to "Yahoo Account."
  3. The "Reply-to address" should be blank.

If there is an address in the Reply-to field, delete it and click Save.

+The email was sent to the wrong address

Occasionally a typo occurs when addressing an email or adding a contact to our address book.

Verify that the sender has your full email address. To find your email address:

  1. Mouse over the Settings menu icon Small gear icon | select Settings.
  2. Your full email address is beside "Yahoo Account."

Delayed Messages

Most emails arrive within a few minutes, but can sometimes be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

+Why is my email delayed?

You can see where the delay occurred by reviewing the email's full header.

In the full header, look for one or more lines that say "Received", like this example:

slide left to see more

Received: from sender4.lodo.merc.com (208.146.68.36) by mta1.yahoomail.com with SMTP; 22 Jul 2012 15:13:23 -0700 (PDT)
  • These are the delivery records.
  • Records are listed with the first delivery at the bottom and the newest delivery at the top.
  • Example above: "mta1.yahoomail.com" (a Yahoo Mail computer) received an email from "sender4.lodo.merc.com" on 22 July 2012 at 3:13:23 PM PDT.

Identify the delay: Find the computer that held onto the message the longest before sending it to the next computer.

Tip: You can also use this third-party tool to parse the header automatically. We hope this proves useful; however, it's not a Yahoo tool and we don't endorse it.
