Compose and format emails

New to Yahoo Mail? We have the basics, and some advanced formatting options, to help you start emailing your friends and family.

Composing an email

The info below will have you emailing like a pro in no time at all.

+ Creating a new email

Click Compose from the Left Navigation column.

Here are the three main sections of an email.

The address field

The subject 

  • A brief summary of what your email is about. 
  • Keep the subject short and simple.
    - Writing about a group meeting over lunch? You could say, "Lunch meeting."

The body 

  • This is where you write and express your thoughts.
  • You can write as little or as much as you want. 

+ Saving a draft

Never lose a message you're composing again!

  • Your email is automatically saved as a draft message every time you stop typing.
    - The last save time will be indicated beside the formatting toolbar.
  • Access saved draft messages by clicking Drafts in the Left Navigation column.

+ Sending an email

When you're ready to give the email to your contacts, click Send.

  • Send images, documents, and music to your contacts in just a few clicks.

+ Formatting an email

The Rich Text formatting toolbar lets you change font, color, and style options for your text.

Icon Description
 The Font icon  Font: Contains options for font style and font size.
 The Bold icon  Bold: Changes highlighted text to bold.
 The Italic icon  ItalicChanges highlighted text to italic.
 The font color icon  Text Color: Contains options for font color and color highlighting around the selected text.
 The Bullets and Numbering icon  Bullets and numbering: Creates bulleted or numbered lists.
 The Indent icon  Increase/decrease indent: Moves text to the left or right. Place the cursor where you would like to move the text and then click this button.
 The Align icon  Align text: Changes text alignment of highlighted text. Choose from flush-left, centered, or flush-right.
 The Hyperlink icon  Insert Link: Insert a hyperlink to a web site.
 The emoticon icon  Emoticons: Click to add an emoticon.
 The Spell Check icon  Spell check: Click to activate spell check.
- Select the down arrow just to the right of this icon to spell check a specific language.
 The Plain Text icon  Plain Text: Switch to Plain Text mode.


  Did you know? You can underline selected text by pressing CMD + U (for Mac) or CTRL + U (for Windows).

+ Unable to see your formatting options?

You're most likely in Plain Text mode. Click the Rich Text icon The double arrow icon beside "Send" to access your formatting toolbar.

+ Setting your default font

Yahoo Mail remembers the last rich text font you used to email someone and will keep that as your default font for the next email you compose.

You can; however, select the default font used in plain text mode. 

Setting your default plain text font

  1. Mouse over the Settings menu icon Gear Icon, | select Settings.
  2. Click Writing email.
  3. Select the font you want from the drop-down menus next to "Default plain text font."
  4. Click Save.
