Access Yahoo Mail in Windows Live Mail

It's good to have options. Here's how to access your Yahoo Mail account's messages in Windows Live Mail.


Step 1: Enabling POP in Yahoo Mail

 Important: Only messages from your Yahoo Mail's Inbox and Spam folders can be delivered to an external email client.

  1. Sign in to Yahoo Mail.
  2. Mouse over the Settings menu icon Gear Icon |select Settings.
    - The "Settings" window opens.
  3. To the right of "Yahoo Account," click Edit.
    - A window with additional account settings opens.
  4. To the right of "Access your Yahoo Mail elsewhere," select POP.
  5. Select your POP option from the drop-down menu:
    • Don't download spam email - Only delivers your Inbox messages, not your Spam folder.
    • Download spam with no special indicators - Delivers Inbox and Spam messages with no visible "Spam" indicator.
    • Download spam, but prefix the word "Spam" - Delivers Inbox and Spam messages. Spam messages contain "Spam" in the subject line.
  6. Click Save.

Step 2: Setting up Yahoo Mail in Windows Live Mail

  1. Launch Windows Live Mail.
  2. Click Add e-mail account.
  3. Enter the following information:
    • E-mail address - Your full Yahoo Mail email address (e.g., user@yahoo.com.)
    • Password - Your Yahoo Mail password.
    • Remember password - Clear this check box (optional) if you don't want Windows Live Mail to retain your Yahoo Mail password
    • Display Name - The name you want to display on your sent messages.
    • Select Manually configure server settings for e-mail account.
  4. Click Next.
  5. In the "Add email account" window:
    • Make sure your settings match the POP settings for Yahoo Mail.
    • Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
    • For "Log on using," select Clear text authentication.
    • Select My outgoing server requires authentication.
    • Click Next.
      - The message, "You have successfully entered in the information required to set up your account" will appear.
  6. Select Set this account as the default mail account.
  7. Click Finish.
