Access Yahoo Mail in Microsoft Outlook 2007

It's good to have options. Here's how to access your Yahoo Mail account's messages in an external mail program like Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Step 1: Enabling POP in Yahoo Mail

 Important: Only messages from your Yahoo Mail's Inbox and Spam folders can be delivered to an external email client.

  1. Sign in to Yahoo Mail.
  2. Mouse over the Settings menu icon Gear Icon |select Settings.
    - The "Settings" window opens.
  3. To the right of "Yahoo Account," click Edit.
    - A window with additional account settings opens.
  4. To the right of "Access your Yahoo Mail elsewhere," select POP.
  5. Select your POP option from the drop-down menu:
    • Don't download spam email - Only delivers your Inbox messages, not your Spam folder.
    • Download spam with no special indicators - Delivers Inbox and Spam messages with no visible "Spam" indicator.
    • Download spam, but prefix the word "Spam" - Delivers Inbox and Spam messages. Spam messages contain "Spam" in the subject line.
  6. Click Save.

Step 2: Setting up your Yahoo Mail account in Outlook 2007

  1. Select Tools | Account Settings.
  2. Click the E-mail tab.
  3. Click New.
    - It's just below the tab label.
  4. Click Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Manually configure server settings or additional server types.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Internet E-mail.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Fill in the following information or take the action:

    Your Name Your name or an alias name  
    E-mail Address Your Yahoo! address — for example,  
    Incoming mail server  
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP)  
    User Name The first portion of your email address, for example,  
    Password Your email account password.  
    Remember password   Select to avoid being asked for a password.
    Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)   Make sure this is clear of a checkmark.
  11. Click More Settings.
  12. Click Outgoing Server.
  13. Click My Outgoing Server requires SMTP Authentication.
  14. Click Advanced.
  15. Fill in the following information or take the action:

    Use the following type of encrypted connection SSL  
    Incoming Server (POP3) 995  
    This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)   Select
    Leave a copy of messages on the server   Select **
    * Another setting enables SSL/TLS and uses 587 as the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) port number.
    Either way, you must enable either the SSL or TLS mode for the Outgoing SMTP server.
    ** This makes your emails accessible in Outlook and Yahoo Mail.
  16. Click OK.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Click Finish.
