Configure proxy settings for Yahoo Messenger

If you're having a tough time signing in and you know your proxy server settings, you can manually configure Yahoo Messenger to connect to the Internet.


Configure your proxy settings

HTTP proxy

  1. Click Messenger | Sign Out.
    - You'll be signed out of Yahoo Messenger.
  2. Click Messenger | Connection Preferences.
  3. Select Connect via a proxy server.
  4. Select HTTP proxy.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  7. Click Tools | Internet Options.
    - The "Internet Options" window opens.
  8. Click Connections.
  9. Click LAN Settings.
    - The "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" dialog box opens.
  10. Under "Proxy Server," select the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox.
  11. Enter your information into Address and Port.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Advanced to verify that your proxy settings for secure connections are correct.
  14. Attempt to access the Yahoo login page and the Yahoo homepage.
    Keep in mind: That if you can't access either page using Internet Explorer, contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider to help you connect.
  15. In Yahoo Messenger, click Sign In.

SOCKS proxy

  1. Click Messenger | Sign Out.
    - You'll be signed out of Yahoo Messenger.
  2. Click Messenger | Connection Preferences.
  3. Select Connect via a proxy server.
  4. Select SOCKS proxy.
  5. Enter your information into Server name, Port, User ID, and Password.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In Yahoo Messenger, click Sign In.
