How to set a default web browser

This article gives steps to reset your default web browser in Microsoft Windows so that Yahoo Messenger can open web links.

You may receive one of the following error messages:

  • "Application not found."
  • "Windows cannot find" followed by a web address.
  • "This file does not have a program assocated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

Yahoo Messenger uses your default web browser application when accessing links.

You may need to reset your default browser setting in Windows.

To set the default browser in Windows XP:

  1. On your keyboard, press the key combination Windows Logo + R. This opens the "Run" command.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl | click OK. This opens "Add or Remove Programs."
  3. In the left column, click Set Program Access and Defaults.
  4. Click Custom.
  5. Under "Choose a default Web browser," click on your preferred browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome.
  6. Click OK.

To set the default browser in Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  1. On your keyboard, press the key combination Windows Logo + R. This opens the "Run" command.
  2. Type computerdefaults | click OK. This opens "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults."
  3. Click Custom.
  4. Under "Choose a default Web browser," click on your preferred browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome.
  5. Click OK.
