Access Yahoo Mail using Mac Mail (for OSX v.10.5 or 10.6)

Have a Yahoo Mail account and use Mac Mail? By setting up Mac Mail to receive emails from your Yahoo account, you can store your emails offline for viewing anytime.


Automatically set up Yahoo Mail with Mac Mail

Mac Mail can usually configure your Yahoo Mail account settings with these steps:

  1. Open Mac Mail.
  2. Select Add Account | File.
    - If this is the first time you've opened Mail, you'll be automatically prompted to add an account.
  3. Enter your Full Name, email address, and password.

Your Yahoo Mail account should be automatically configured at this point. If not, you can manually configure it.

Manually set up Yahoo Mail with Mac Mail

 Important: For some steps below, you'll need to reference Yahoo Mail's POP settings.

+Getting Started

  1. Open Mac Mail.
    - If you weren't prompted with the "Welcome to Mail" screen, select Mail | Preferences.
  2. Click Accounts.
  3. On the "Accounts" screen, click the "+" icon.
  4. Enter your name, Yahoo Mail email address, and password.
  5. Hold the Option key down until "Create" turns into "Continue."
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Release the Option key.

  1. Select the "Account Type" menu | POP.
  2. In the "Description" field, enter a useful description.
    - For example, My Yahoo email account.
  3. In the "Incoming Mail Server" field, enter the incoming POP server listed in the Yahoo Mail POP settings.
  4. In the "User Name" field, enter your Yahoo ID.
    • Your ID is typically your email address without the "@yahoo.com."
    • If you have either an "@ymail.com" or "@rocketmail.com" address, your ID is your entire email address.
  5. Enter your password.
  6. Hold the Option key down until "Create" turns into "Continue."
  7. Click Continue.
  8. Release the Option key.
  9. Click the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" box.
  10. Select "Authentication" menu | Password.
  11. Hold the Option key down until "Create" turns into "Continue."
  12. Click Continue.
  13. Release the Option key.
  14. In the "Outgoing Mail Server" field, enter the outgoing SMTP server listed in the Yahoo Mail POP settings.
  15. Click the "Use Authentication" box.
  16. Enter your user name and password.
  17. Hold the Option key down until "Create" turns into "Continue."
  18. Click Continue.
  19. Release the Option key.
  20. Click the box next to "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)."
  21. Select "Authentication" menu | Password.
  22. Click Create.

 

Finishing up

  1. After Mac Mail is launched, select Mail | Preferences.
  2. Click the Accounts tab.
  3. Select your Yahoo Mail account.
  4. In the "Port" field, enter the incoming port listed in the Yahoo Mail POP settings.
  5. Click the red icon in the upper-left corner to confirm and save the changes.

 

+Additional info

Some ISPs (Internet Service Provider) don't permit message routing through another SMTP server while you're connected to their network. To fix this, replace the SMTP server for the other ISP or email account by using the SMTP server that's associated with the ISP you use to connect to the Internet.
