home page
Your home page is the main page of your web site, the page your site visitors will see when they go to your domain, such as The file that generates this default web page (often called the index page) when you create your site with Yahoo Web Hosting is called "index.html." Site visitors can see your home page when they enter either or in the address bar of their web browser. With a Yahoo Domains plan, you can create a home page at your domain with the Starter Web Page Wizard. Learn how in our create your home page article.

We automatically create an "Under Construction" home page for you at your web address when you sign up for your Web Hosting plan. When you build your own web site or page using a Yahoo tool, your home page will be named "index.html" automatically and replace the "Under Construction" page we created for you. Be sure you do not change the name of this file, or your new home page will not display at your domain. If you create your home page using a third-party tool, be sure to name your main page "index.html."

.htaccess (Hypertext Access)
The name .htaccess refers to the main configuration file for Apache, a popular open-source HTTP server. The .htaccess file can be used to create custom error pages and web page redirects, set up password protection, enable SSI, and more. Yahoo does not currently allow you to upload .htaccess files to your account. For other customization options, we recommend the custom Error Pages and password-protection features available in your Web Hosting Control Panel.

HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is a formatting language used to create web pages and documents. HTML consists of sets of codes (called tags) that are used to control the way a document is displayed by a web browser, such as Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. A document that is formatted using HTML tags — such as the page you're viewing now — is called an HTML document. Learn more about HTML in Web Hosting and Merchant Solutions plans.
