Folders in Yahoo Mail

Stay organized and reduce your Inbox's clutter with folders in Yahoo Mail.

 On a mobile device? You can organize your folders in the Yahoo Mail app.

Access your folders

Your folders are in a collapsible list in the Left Navigation column.

  1. Click the arrow next to "Folders" to collapse and expand your list.
    • A collapsed list displays a right-pointing arrow Click arrow to show folders next to "Folders." Click it to view your folders.
    • An expanded list displays a down arrow Click arrow to hide folders next to "Folders." Click it to collapse your list.
  2. Click a folder's name to display its messages in the content area.

Manage your folders

Add a folder

  1. In the Left Navigation column, mouse over "Folders" | click the New Folder icon New Folder icon.
    - The "Add a New Folder" pop-up appears.
  2. Enter the name of your folder.
  3. Click OK.

  Folder limits: You can create up to 491 personal folders.

Delete a folder

  1. Right-click on a folder. On a Mac, control-click a folder.
  2. Select Delete Folder.
  3. Click OK to confirm.

 Important: A folder must be empty before it can be deleted. Learn how to delete email.

Rename folders

  1. Right-click on a folder. On a Mac, control-click a folder.
  2. Select Rename Folder.
    - The folder's name becomes editable.
  3. Enter your folder's new name.
  4. Press Enter.

  Good to know: You can also double-click on a folder to rename it.

Move emails to a folder

  1. Select or open the message(s) you want to move.
  2. Click Move.
    - Your folder list appears.
  3. Select a destination folder.

The email(s) will be moved to the folder you selected.

Add a subfolder

  1. Right-click on an existing folder. On a Mac, control-click a folder.
  2. Click Create subfolder.
  3. Enter the name of your subfolder.
  4. Press Enter.

  Subfolders can be deleted, renamed, and moved just like primary folders.

Add a folder

  1. Click Edit next to "My Folders" in the left column of Yahoo Mail.
  2. Enter the name of your new folder under "Add Folder."
  3. Click Add.

Delete a folder

  1. Click Edit next to "My Folders" in the left column of Yahoo Mail.
  2. Under "My Folders," click Delete next to the folder you want to remove.
  3. Click OK to confirm.

 Be sure before you delete! A folder doesn't have to be emptied before it can be deleted in Basic Mail.

Rename a folder

  1. Click Edit next to "My Folders" in the left column of Yahoo Mail.
  2. Under "My Folders," click Rename next to the folder you want to rename.
    - The "Rename Folder" box displays.
  3. Enter your new folder name.
  4. Click OK.

Move emails to a folder

  1. Select or open the message(s) you want to move.
  2. Click the "Actions" drop-down menu | select your destination folder under "Move to."
    - Your selected folder's name replaces "Actions" in the drop-down menu.
  3. Click Apply next to your folder's name.
