Protect your Wi-Fi like you would your front door

Follow these simple steps to keep your network—and the devices connected to it—safe.

Securing your home's internet is really important. If hackers get access to it, they could potentially take control of all your devices—from your laptop and video doorbell to your baby monitor and security system. But don't worry. There are two easy ways to make your Wi-Fi more secure.

Change the password

Your Wi-Fi router comes with a default password; it's usually printed on the side or back of the device, but hackers might be able to find it online. To stop them, create a new password that's unique and complex by using a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Rename your network

Your router comes with a default name for your wireless internet, likely containing the brand of the manufacturer (such as "NETGEAR00"). Not changing this name could make it easier for hackers to sneak onto your Wi-Fi. To secure your home's internet, create a new name that doesn't include your personal information, like your birthday or street address.

How to change your password and rename your network

It's easy. The instructions are typically printed on your router, and they require you to go to a website or type your IP address into a web browser. Once you've done so, enter the login credentials the manufacturer provides and follow the rest of the steps.
