If you've been prompted to reset your password or received a security notice from Yahoo, you can learn more about your account security on our help page.

What is an alternate email address?

Add an alternate email address and quickly recover your account should you ever forget your password.

An alternate email address is any email address other than your -Yahoo email address. Your alternate email address can be the email you use at work or school or any other non -Yahoo email address, such as @outlook.com, or @gmail.com.

Benefits of adding an alternate email address

  • We can easily verify your account for you: If you forget your password or your account becomes compromised, a "reset password" link can be sent to your alternate email address.
  • We can communicate with you: If we need to communicate with you regarding updates to -Yahoo and changes to your account (e.g. password changes). We can also send you updates and notifications about your premium services.

Without an alternate email address, you only have two options to recover your account

  • Ask Yahoo to send a new password to your mobile phone on file. (This is strongly recommended.)
  • Go to the "Sign In" page, click I can’t access my account, and verify who you are by answering the secret questions you entered during registration.

It is an account security best practice to add an alternate email address and/or mobile number to your account. If you haven't already, we recommend you take a moment to add one.
