Turning Pop-Up Blocker On and Off

When you’re browsing the Internet, pop-up windows can be very distracting. Pop-Up Blocker is a feature of the Yahoo! Toolbar that lets you manage pop-up windows. Pop-Up Blocker stops many types of windows that try to open automatically on top of the browser window, including:

  • pop-up and pop-under ads
  • windows that open after a page loads
  • windows that open when you leave a site
  • windows that open when you close your browser

Note: Yahoo!’s Pop-Up Blocker is available only for Internet Explorer. The Firefox browser has its own pop-up blocker, so you don’t need the Yahoo! version.

There are some types of windows that Pop-Up Blocker doesn’t block. For example, it allows windows that open because you click a link in the browser. Other types of windows that Pop-Up Blocker allows include:

  • pop-up windows from any site that you add to your allowed list
  • any pop-up window while you press and hold the Ctrl key (Ctrl overrides Pop-Up Blocker while you press it)
  • instant messaging windows
  • error windows
  • Flash or DHTML windows within the browser
  • windows that open because of software or adware on your computer

You can turn Pop-Up Blocker off and on and adjust other Pop-Up Blocker settings whenever you want.

Here’s How

  1. Be sure that the Yahoo! Toolbar software is installed on each computer where you want to use Pop-Up Blocker.

  2. To check if Pop-Up Blocker is on or off, just check the icon appearance. The Blocker is on when you see Pop-Up Blocker on and off when you see Pop-Up Blocker off.

Also, if you hold the cursor over the button, the tooltip that appears tells you if the Blocker is on or off.

The tooltip says whether Pop-Up Blocker is on or off.

  3. To turn Pop-Up Blocker on or off, select Enable Pop-Up Blocker from the menu.

Select Enable Pop-Up Blocker from the menu to turn the feature on or off.

A check in front of the menu item indicates that the Blocker is on.
