Consider the following case: you see an offer on the Web that sounds really interesting, but before you can check it out, you have to provide an email address. Do you really want to give out your address to some online marketer and risk getting "offers" (in other words, junk mail) in your mailbox forever? No?? Then disposable addresses are your answer!
BT Yahoo! Mail lets you create "disposable" email addresses to use whenever you don’t want to share your real BT Yahoo! Mail address. It lets you save your primary email address for people you know and trust, and give these disposable ones to others, such as online vendors, mailing lists, and other Internet services.
If any of your disposable email addresses starts getting spam, you can simply delete that address from BT Yahoo! Mail. Future messages sent to the deleted address bounce back to the sender instead of filling up your BT Yahoo! Mail account.
A couple other disposable address features that you’ll like:
When you use a disposable address to send or reply to a message, your personal name is not included in the sender information. The person who gets your email sees only the disposable address in the From information, not your name.
You can deliver messages sent to your disposable addresses into folders of your choice. Let’s say that you want all the email related to your child’s school to automatically go in the School folder. Create a disposable address specifying the School folder as its delivery option and then give the address to your child’s school. When a message arrives with that address, BT Yahoo! Mail delivers it to the School folder (If you don’t specify a folder for a disposable address, BT Yahoo! Mail automatically delivers the messages to your Inbox.)
To get started with disposable addresses, specify your base name and an initial address.
You create your base name just once. After that, you add keywords to create as many as 500 unique disposable addresses.
In the upper-right corner of your BT Yahoo! Mail page, click the Options link, then select Mail Options from the menu.
The General page opens.
On the left side of the mail options page, select the Disposable Email Addresses option.
Click the Add Address button at the top of the page.
The first setup window appears.
Note: All the disposable addresses that you create use the same simple pattern:
You choose one base name (yourbasebame). Once you have the base name set, you can create up to 500 disposable addresses, each using a different keyword of your choice. For example, if you chose jacaranda9441 as your base name, you can create firstname.lastname@example.org, jacaranda9441-FlyHighAirline@yahoo.co.uk, and so on. You can create new addresses instantly, whenever you need them, from the Mail Options page.
Type a base name of your choice, then click the Next button.
Your base name must begin with a letter, contain no spaces or symbols, and be different from your BT Username.
BT Yahoo! checks whether or not the base name you’ve typed is available. If it’s not available, BT Yahoo! directs you to choose another base name.
Tip: You can’t use your BT Username or display name for either the base name or a keyword. This prevents anyone from figuring out your real BT Yahoo! Mail address from your disposable addresses.
The next window prompts you to create your first disposable address.
Type a keyword to use with your base name.
Use a word that makes sense to you and make sure not to use spaces or symbols.
In the lower part of the window, you can optionally specify several other preferences for the new disposable address:
Deliver To: Choose a personal folder where you want to direct all messages sent to this disposable address. The default delivery folder is Inbox.
Indicator: Assign a colour code to all messages sent to this disposable address. This colour code shows up next to the sender's name in the delivery folder. The default is no colour.
Your "From" name: The name your recipients see in the From area of messages sent from this address. This name appears in addition to the disposable address.
Use Filters: Check this option if you want BT Yahoo! Mail to apply your personal filters to the messages before delivering them.
Use SpamGuard: Check this option if you want SpamGuard to filter all messages sent to your disposable address. If SpamGuard identifies a message as spam, it delivers the message to your Spam folder, even though you set the Deliver to option for this address to a personal folder.
Notes: Add a note to help you remember the purpose of this disposable address. For example, you can make note of the web site you created it for.
Click the Save button to finish the setup process.
Your new disposable address displays on the options page.
If you don’t like the base name you’ve created or you made a spelling error, you can delete it and start over. All disposable addresses created with the base name are deleted. You have two opportunities to create a base name that you like (in other words, you can change it once).
On the Disposable Email Addresses page, select any of your disposable addresses, then click the Edit button.
The edit window opens.
At the top of the window to the right of your base name, click the Delete link.
Confirm the deletion.
Create another new base name as described above.
You can return to this page to create additional disposable addresses whenever you need them.
