Accessing Other Email Accounts

Overview Adding Another Account Sending Mail Using Another Email Address Receiving Email From Another Account Editing an Account Deleting an Account

Adding Another Mail Account to BT Yahoo! Mail

The first step in sending and retrieving messages from an external email account is to add the account information to BT Yahoo! Mail.

If you plan to have BT Yahoo! Mail retrieve email from your other account, you’ll need to know the POP mail server for that account. This is the remote server where your account information and messages are stored. You’ll also need the mail server port number if the number is something other than 110. Unless the account is a Yahoo! or BT Yahoo! account, BT Yahoo! Mail Customer Care won’t be able to provide you with this information. Contact your Internet service provider or network administrator if you need assistance.

Tip: You can’t use BT Yahoo! Mail to receive messages from a Web-based email account that hasn’t been set up for POP access.

Here’s How

To start adding an account:

  1. Sign in to the BT Yahoo! Mail account into which you want to access the external account.

  2. In the upper-right corner of the your Mail page, click the Options link, then select Mail Options from the menu.

Click the Options link, then select Mail Options.

    The Mail Options page opens.

  3. Click the Accounts link on the left.

    Click the Accounts link.

The Accounts page appears, displaying information about your BT Yahoo! Mail account(s).

  4. Click the Add Account button to begin adding one of your other mail accounts to BT Yahoo! Mail.

Click the Add Account button to begin adding an external email account.

A page opens where you can enter information about the external account.

To set up the account to send email from BT Yahoo! Mail:

  1. In the Sending Mail section of the page, enter a name for the new account (for example, Work or School).

Type a name for the new account.

  2. Next enter a "From" name and the email address of the non-Yahoo! email account.

Specify a From name and the email address for the external account.

  3. When someone replies to a message that you send from the non-Yahoo! account, the reply automatically goes back to the email address associated with the account. If you want, you can specify a different default reply-to address, such as your BT Yahoo! Mail address, for responses to be sent to.

    • Click the Change reply-to address link next to the Email address.

Click the Change reply-to address link.

      A Reply-to address box opens

    • Enter the reply-to address you want to use instead of the account’s email address.

      Enter a reply-to address.

  4. If you plan to use BT Yahoo! Mail only to send messages from this account (not to retrieve messages as well), you’re done. Click the Save Changes button to finish adding the new account.

    Click Save Changes

The Verify Email Address window opens. You must verify that you are the owner of the non-Yahoo! account before you can send email from it. See below for more on how to verify the account.

To set up the account so BT Yahoo! Mail can retrieve email from it:

  1. If you also want BT Yahoo! Mail to retrieve email messages from the external account, you need to provide the information in the Receiving Mail section.

Specify the options for receiving mail from the external mail account.

    • Deliver incoming message to—the BT Yahoo! Mail folder where messages from this account should be delivered. Inbox is the default.

    • Server—the remote mail server where your external account, including that account’s email messages, is stored.

Tip: If you skip this section and decide later to have BT Yahoo! Mail retrieve messages from this account, you can edit the account and add the necessary information.

To verify that you own the external mail account:

The final step in setting up an external account for use in BT Yahoo! Mail is to verify that you are, in fact, the account’s owner.

  1. In the Verify Email Address window, Step 1, click the blue Send Code link.

    Click the Send Code link.

BT Yahoo! Mail sends a message containing the verification code to the email address shown in the window (that is, the address associated with the non-Yahoo! account).

  2. To complete the verification process immediately:

    • Go to your non-Yahoo! email account and look for a message from Yahoo! Member Services.

    • Note the confirmation code in the message.

    • Enter the confirmation code in the box in Step 3 of the Verify Email Address window, then click the Done button.

Enter the confirmation code, then click Done.

BT Yahoo! Mail confirms that you’ve successfully verified the account.

      The address has been verified.

Tip: You can also follow the instructions in the email message to complete the process.

  3. If you prefer to complete the verification process at a later time:

    • Click the Verify Later button.

      Click Verify Later.

BT Yahoo! Mail confirms that your new account has been saved, but still needs to be verified.

This account still needs to be verified.

The account appears in the list of accounts as "Verification pending" until you complete the verification process.
