Setting Up Your Profile Card

The first time you try to access your profile on Yahoo!, you’re invited to create a new profile. The basic information you enter becomes the basis for your profile card. It’s easy to get started—just follow the steps below.

Basic Information for Teens

Some of the basic information that a teenager (13-17 years old) can add is different from an adult’s basic information:

  • Teens cannot indicate their age or year of birth on their public profiles on Yahoo!.
  • A teen can create a basic profile, with some information visible to the public. First name, last name, location, and birthday are only shared with the teen’s connections. Teen users can edit this information, change settings, and add additional information after they create their initial profile. The display name and gender are visible to the public, but the remainder of the information is visible only to the teen’s connections.
  • Birth date information is only shared with a teen’s connections; it is used for birthday reminders.

Here’s How

To create your new profile:

  1. Go to your profile by entering this address in your browser’s address line:

    http://profiles.yahoo.com
  2. If you’re not already signed in, you’ll be prompted to enter your Yahoo! ID and password.

    Sign in to Yahoo!

Your profile opens with a Welcome page on top.

  3. On the Welcome page, choose the setting your want for each of the two privacy options:

Click Continue to begin creating your profile.

    • Allow people to find me by my first name, last name, display name and email address

If you check this option, anyone can use your first name, last name, display name, or email address to search for your profile on the Yahoo! network.

If you don’t check this option, people searching on the Yahoo! network won’t be able to find your profile, even if they know your first name, last name, display name, and/or email address.

    • Allow my connections to share my information labeled "My Connections" with third-party applications they install and the developers who made the applications.

With this option checked, your connections can share information about you that they have access to with other applications, such as music sites and social networking sites.

Let's say that you've noted your favorite bands in the Favorite Music box of the About Me section in your profile and this information can be viewed by "Anyone" or "My Connections", and let's say that you allow your connections to share this information with third-party applications. If one of your connections uses a third-party app (for instance, a music app), that app can access your favorite bands and recommend them to your connection. Now you and your connection have some music in common. You can chat about the music, listen to the same groups, and grab tickets together the next time one of those bands is in town.

Note: Even if you check this option, only the information on your profile that your connections normally see is shared with third-party applications that your connections add. Applications that your connections add won’t have access to any private information that you don’t share with your connections.

If you uncheck this option, personal information you share with your connections won’t be shared with third-party applications that they use.

Tip: You can change these settings anytime through the Settings page in your profile.

  4. Click the Get Started button to save your settings.

Your initial profile page now appears, showing the basic information on your profile card.
