Searching Local Businesses

You can find local services and businesses using the Local search.

Yahoo! Local brings together the best of the Yahoo! Yellow Pages, Yahoo! Maps, and Yahoo! Search. Like the yellow pages, Yahoo! Local provides general information, like the name, phone number, and address of businesses and services.

The more specific your search, the better and more precise your results will be. Whenever possible, use specific words to describe exactly what you're looking for and Yahoo! Local will bring you directly to results that match. For example, instead of typing "restaurant" try "romantic restaurant" or "Sunday brunch."

Here’s How

  1. In your My Yahoo!, select the Local search option.

    Select the Local search option.

The Search area updates to show two boxes. In the first, you type the business or service you want (such as restaurants) and in the second, you type the physical location you want to search in (such as Sunnyvale, CA).

  2. Type one or more words in the first box (keyword, business name, service), type a location in the second box (any combination of address, city, and state, or the zip code), then click the Local Search button.

Type your words and location, then click the Local Search button.Enlarge

Tip: If you enter an address, like the one for your home or office, Yahoo! Local will calculate the distance for you. The more specific your address, the more precise the calculation will be and the more exact your results. For example, "54th Street, New York, NY" and "kosher deli" will return better results than "New York, NY" "deli".

Yahoo! Search looks through web sites for listings that mention the text you typed and then displays the results in your browser.

The local search results page provides links to merchants that provide the products or services you've searched for. The results include the following:

    • Sponsor results—shown as listings on a colored background. The owners of these businesses have paid to have their listings appear at the top, bottom, or side of a results page.

    • Local listings—shown as listings in the main body of the page. These listings appear in the order in which they relate to your search text, with the most relevant appearing at the top.

  3. To view a page specific to a listing (read and write reviews, access the Web site if one exists), click its link.

Click a listing's link to view its page.

  4. Here are a few of the other things you can do with a local listing result:

    • Open Yahoo! Maps and get directions to the listing by clicking the Get Directions link.

      Click the Get Directions link.

    • Send this listing to your mobile phone by clicking the Send to Phone link (this option is visible when you move the cursor into the listing result).

Click the Send to Phone link.

    • Rate the listing, and if you like, write a review by clicking the Write a review link.

Click the Write a review link.

  5. Narrow your results by clicking the Narrow your search link:

Click the Narrow your search link.

The area below the link expands so that you can narrow the results by category, rating, and downtown locations.

  6. Expand the map so that you have a better view of the listing locations by clicking the Zoom in and search the map link.

Click the Zoom in and search the map link.

Clicking a numbered balloon opens the listing’s descriptive page, the same one you see when you click the listing link in the results.

Click a numbered balloon to view a descriptive page.
