Using Images as Backgrounds

Most predefined themes include images as the background for both the page header and the body of the page (that is, the area that surrounds the content blocks on the page). When you customize a theme, you can leave the existing background images, replace them with solid colors (as described in Creating Custom Themes), or use your own images as backgrounds.

Example of background images

Here’s How

  1. Start creating a custom theme as described in Creating Custom Themes.

  2. In the Customize Theme panel, select the area of the page where you want to change the background, that is, either the page header or the page body.

    Select the page header.

The process is the same for the page body.

  3. Be sure that the Image option is selected in the Background section, then click the Change Image button.

    Click the Change Image button.

Tip: Select the Color option instead of Image if you want to use a solid color as the background.

Now you have two options for finding an image to use—your local computer or Flickr.

  4. To use an image from your local computer:

    • Select the Upload tab (if it’s not already selected).

    • Click the Upload File button on the Upload tab.

      Click the Upload File button.

The file chooser for your computer’s operating system opens.

    • In the file chooser, locate and select the image file that you want to try.

Note: The image file you select must be smaller than 256 KB and must use PNG, JPG, or GIF format.

Your image loads into My Yahoo!, as shown in step 6.

  5. To use an image from your photos on Flickr:

    • Select the Flickr tab.

      Select the Flickr tab.

Thumbnails of all your photos on Flickr display, four at a time.

    • Locate the photo you want to use. You can scroll through the thumbnails of all your photos, ...

...or, if you use sets, you can select a specific set to browse.

Select a Flickr set to look through.

    • To see a larger view of a candidate image, hold the cursor over the thumbnail.

    • When you find the image you want to try, click its thumbnail.

Note: The image file you select must be smaller than 256 KB and must use PNG, JPG, or GIF format.

The image loads into My Yahoo!.

  6. Preview your selected image on the My Yahoo! tab. It appears tiled to completely fill the selected area of the page.

  7. If you like the way the image looks, click the Keep it button to use it as the new background for your theme.

Click Keep it to use this image as your background.

  8. If you don’t like this image, click Cancel and repeat step 4 or step 5 to try another one.

Tip: If your image doesn’t look quite like you expected (for example, it’s too big or too small for the space), you can manipulate it in an image editing program and then upload it again until it looks right.

  9. If you’ve added the image to the background of the body page, and you want to see your image through your content blocks, do the following:

    • Select the content body area in the Customize Theme panel.

      Select the content body area.

    • Under Background, check the box next to Make See-through.

What’s Next

Once you’ve got a new background, why not go all the way and customize the rest of the theme’s colors to coordinate? Make something really special and totally unique!
