Ignoring a Contact

Occasionally, you might receive instant messages from someone you really don’t want to talk with. In fact, you’d like to stop receiving that person’s messages. Yahoo! Messenger for the Web lets you block IDs and stop unwanted messages.

Here’s How

  1. If the person is on your Messenger List, remove that person’s name from the list as follows (you can’t block a person whose name is on your list):

    • Move the cursor over the name so that you see the arrow to the right of the name.

Move the cursor over the contact name so that you see an arrow to the right of the name.

    • Click the arrow, then select the Remove option.

      Select the Remove option.

The name disappears from your list.

This won’t block messages from this person, but it will give you the opportunity to block messages the next time the person tries to contact you.

  2. When someone who is not on your Messenger List sends you an instant message, the conversation tab includes a Block button. If you don’t want to receive messages from this person, do the following:

    • Click the Block button.

      Click the Block button.

A confirmation window opens where you can also report this sender as a spammer.

    • Click the box next to Also report as spam (optional), then click the Block button.

      Click the Block button.

The person’s ID is added to your Ignore List.

  3. When someone who is not on your Messenger List sends a request to add your name to their list, the conversation tab includes a Deny button. If you want to deny this request and block messages from this person, do the following:

    • Click the Deny button.

      Click the Deny button.

A confirmation window opens where you can also block messages from this person.

    • Click the box next to Block all future messages from, then click the Decline button.

Select Block all future messages from, then click the Decline button.

The person’s ID is added to your Ignore List.

What’s Next

If you want to receive messages from a person that you’ve blocked, you need to remove the person’s ID from your Ignore List. This can only be done in Yahoo! Messenger, the client.
