Using Audibles

If you want more than an emoticon, something a bit more verbal, send your contact an Audible. An Audible is an animated character that says something out loud, and you can send one instead of typing a message. Yahoo! Messenger offers a variety of Audibles, from creative hellos to flirtations and insults.

Tip: Audibles aren’t visible when you converse with contacts outside the Yahoo! network, such as your Windows Live™ Messenger contacts and your Pingbox™ visitors.

Here’s How

  1. In a conversation window, click the Audible button.

    Click the Audible button.

A set of Audibles opens above the Audible button.

A set of Audibles opens above the Audible button.

  2. To see a different set of Audibles, click the More Audibles button, then select a category from the See all Audibles menu.

Click the More Audibles button, then select a category from the See all Audibles menu.

A new set of Audibles opens.

  3. Place the cursor over an Audible, then click its SEND button.

Click the SEND button above an Audible.

Both you and your contact hear the Audible and see it in the conversation area of your respective conversation windows depending on each of your settings.

Tip: Without sending an Audible, you can read and hear what it will say. To read what it will say, place the cursor anywhere over the Audible. The text shows above the Audibles. To hear the Audible without sending it, click the picture (not its SEND button).

Click below the SEND button to hear the Audible and read the text version of its voice.

What’s Next

Audibles are on by default, and turning them off (or back on) is easy. In the Messages category of the Preferences window (accessed through the Messenger menu), uncheck Enable Audibles, and then click the OK button.
