Maintaining a Contact’s Details

Your Yahoo! Contacts is like any address book. It’s where you keep information about your friends, family, business associates, and anyone else you care to add. At Yahoo!, these people are referred to as contacts, and the information as their contact details. In Yahoo! Messenger, your Contact List is a list of all of the contacts from your address book, so, you can easily maintain contact details from Messenger. When you add a new person to your Contact List, you are also adding that person to your Yahoo! Contacts.

Note: Pingbox™ visitors are the exception. These are not part of your Address Book, but are visitors to a personal Web page where you’ve added a Pingbox. The Pingbox lets you instant message people who visit your page. For more information, take a look at the Chatting With Visitors to Your Personal Web Page tutorial.

To take full advantage of Yahoo! Messenger and allow for easy communication (instant messaging, making calls, sending SMS text messages, and more), keep contact details current.

Here’s How

  1. To view a contact’s details, right click the name in your Contact List, then select Edit Contact Details from the menu.

    The Contact Details window opens.

  2. Update information in any of the tabs, then click the Save & Close button.

What’s Next

You can update some contact information, such as phone numbers and email addresses, through smart tags found in instant messages. To learn more, see the Using Instant Messaging tutorial.

To quickly populate a contact’s details, request the information directly from the contact. When the contact sends them, you can let Messenger do the work of updating her information.

Words to Know

  • Pingbox: an embedded box on a Web page where visitors to the page can send you instant messages and which lists visitors on your Messenger List.
  • Smart tag: information, such as a phone number or email address, found in an instant message and underscored for your use. Clicking a smart tag allows you to act on the information, such as sending a text message to a mobile phone number, sending an email to an email address, or adding the information to your address book.
