| What Are Messenger’s Call Features? | Checking Your Voice and Sound Quality | Selecting a Ringtone | Importing a Ringtone |
You can import your own sound for Messenger to use as a ringtone when a call comes through. Any sound file with a WAV extension can be used as a custom ringtone, including sound files you create yourself. For example, you could create a sound file using the Sound Recorded application that comes with Microsoft Windows.
Once you’ve created and saved the sound file, import the file into your list of ringtones, and then select it as the default ringtone or assign it to a specific contact.
Open your Messenger Preferences window and select the Alerts & Sounds category. (Remind me how.)
Tip: You can also access the Calling & Audio window by right-clicking a contact’s name and choosing Ringtone > Import From My Computer. This is handy when you want to assign a specific ringtone to a contact and need to import it first.
On the right side of the window under Alert me when, find and select I receive an incoming voice call.
The area below the list updates to show you a list of ringtones.
Click the Import button to the right of the list.

The Import a Ringtone window opens.
In the Import a Ringtone window, locate and select your .wav file, click Play to hear the sound if desired, then click the Import button to copy the file into Messenger.

After clicking Import, the list updates to include your selected file.

You can select the imported ringtone as your default ringtone or as the ringtone for a specific contact. (Remind me how.)
You can remove a ringtone from the list by clicking the Remove button.

Each ringtone corresponds to a WAV file stored on your computer. Removing a ringtone from the list does not remove the file from your computer. This means that you can add the ringtone back later by clicking the Import button.
Tip: If you installed Yahoo! Messenger in the default location, the ringtones packaged with Messenger are stored in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media\RingTones.
