Adding a Contact From an Instant Message

Anyone using a compatible instant messenger application, such as Windows Live™ Messenger, can send you an instant message without being listed in your Messenger List. When this happens, Messenger lets you know that the person isn’t on your Messenger List, and you can add him or her if you like.

Tip: You can also choose to ignore this user or report this user as a spammer. For more information, see the Learn More.

Here’s How

Depending on your Preference setting for messages that arrive from unknown people, Messenger opens a conversation window or an offline window where all unknown senders are displayed.
  1. If you want to add a person listed in an offline window, click the Reply button to open a conversation window with the person.

    Click the Reply button.Enlarge

  2. In the conversation window, click the Add User button in the conversation window.

Click the Add User button in the conversation window.

The Add to Messenger List window opens.

  3. Complete the Add window as described in Using the Add to Messenger List Window.
