Placing a Yahoo! Phone Out Call

With Yahoo! Phone Out, you can call your friends’ regular phones or mobile phones just about anywhere in the world. You need to connect to the Internet and sign in to Yahoo! Messenger, but your friends can be computer free... they just need to be near the phone.

Tip: The Yahoo! Phone Out service isn’t available when conversing with Windows Live™ Messenger contacts.

When making Phone Out calls from your computer, keep these basic requirements in mind:

  • When making domestic calls:

A domestic call is a call made within the country selected as My Country in the Yahoo! Voice preference category (as explained in "Signing Up for Yahoo! Phone Out").

Include the area code when dialing a number in countries that use area codes, even when dialing locally. For example, if you live in New York City, and want to place a call to a friend who is also in New York City, you must include the area code for New York City.

  • When making international calls:

All international calls require 3 sets of numbers.

IDD + Country Code + Telephone Number

IDD is the international access prefix.

The following example shows a call from Spain to Singapore:

    006555555555

    That is:

    00 (Spain IDD) +

    65 (Country Code Singapore) +

    55555555 (Phone Number Singapore)

WARNING: You can’t dial 911 and other emergency service numbers using Yahoo! Phone Out and Yahoo! Messenger. Use regular phones or mobile phones to dial 911 and other emergency service numbers. Please inform others who are using your Yahoo! Voice services and Messenger that they must dial 911 and other emergency service numbers using regular phones or mobile phones.

Here’s How

  1. Begin a call in one of the following ways:

    • If the person isn’t in your Yahoo! Address Book, type the full phone number in the Contact Search Bar. (Include the area code if required and the IDD and country code for international calls.) Then select the Call Phone Number option from the drop-down list.

Type the full phone number, then select Call Phone Number.

    • If the person is in your Yahoo! Address Book, begin typing the person’s phone number or name in the Contact Search Bar. Messenger displays matching phone numbers or the name along with several communication options. Select Call Home or Call Mobile.

Type a name and select Call Home or Call Mobile.

    • In a friend’s contact card, select any phone number, or click the phone icon and select a number from the displayed menu.

Select a phone number from the friend's contact card.

    • If you’re already having an IM conversation with the contact you want to call, click the arrow next to the Call button in your IM window, then select a phone number from the displayed menu.

Click the Call button arrow and select a phone number.

Any of these opens the Call window, and the timer begins timing the call.

The Call window displays the status of the call.

When your friend answers, carry on a conversation just as you would from your phone.

    Tips:

The first time you make a call, a window displays asking you to select your country. If you didn’t choose your country as described in the previous task, "Signing Up for Yahoo! Phone Out", now is the time to do it.

If you make a call to a phone answered by an automated attendant asking you to enter various numbers in order to route your call—you know, "Please press 1 for more options"—click the dial pad button in the Call window to open the dial pad where you can select the numbers you need.

    Click the dial pad button.

If the number you called isn’t in your address book, the Call window gives you the opportunity to save the phone number.

Click the Save link to save this phone number.

  2. When you’re ready to hang up, click the End Call button.

    Click the End call button.

The call is disconnected, and the Call window displays the length and time of the conversation.

The Call window indicates the length of the completed call.

  3. If you like, call the person back by clicking the Call back button.

    Click the Call back button.
