Offline and Pending Contacts

If you have quite a few contacts in your list, you might find it helpful to hide those who are offline and pending. As contacts sign in to their Messenger, their names appear in your Messenger List. When they sign out, their names disappear.

Display Images

You can show display images (if allowed by the contact) in place of the default smiley icon.

Yahoo! IDs

Identify your contacts on your Messenger List using their Yahoo! IDs or their first and last names or nicknames.

Here’s How

To show or hide offline and pending contacts

  1. In your Messenger window, select Show Offline Contacts from the Contacts menu.

    Tip: A check mark next to a menu option indicates that the option is active. Notice that the Show Offline Contacts option now includes a check mark.

  2. To hide offline and pending contacts, select the Show Offline Contacts menu option again.

    Yahoo! Messenger hides the offline and pending contacts from your Messenger List.

 

To show or hide contact display images:

  1. Open your Messenger Preferences window by selecting Preferences from the Messenger menu in your Messenger window or from the Conversation menu in your IM window.

  2. In the Preferences window, select the Display Image category.

  3. On the right side of the Preferences window, under Display Image Options, check Enable display images, then check Show other people’s display images on my Messenger List.

    Check Enable Display images, then check Show other people's display images on my Messenger List.

  4. Click the OK button.

    Your Messenger List shows the display images of contacts who allow theirs to be displayed.

    Tip: To hide the display images, follow the steps above except uncheck the Show other people’s display images... option.

 

To show Yahoo! IDs:

  1. In the Preferences window, select the Appearance category.

  2. On the right side of the Preferences window, under For each contact on the Messenger List, show their, select either Nickname or First and Last name or Yahoo! ID, then click the OK button.

    Select name or Yahoo! ID.

    Your Messenger List updates accordingly.

  • Contact: a person with whom you interact; someone to whom you might want to send an email or instant message.
  • Display image: a picture or Avatar that represents you in some way and that you share with your contacts during IM conversations.
  • Messenger List: a list of coworkers, friends, family, and associates who also use Messenger.
  • Yahoo! ID: the name by which a person is known to all Yahoo! networks.
