Inviting a Friend While Instant Messaging

Yahoo! Messenger uses smart tags in instant messages—a feature that identifies phone numbers and email addresses and marks them so that you can act on them. When you see an underscored email address in an instant message, you can use the smart tag to invite the email owner to use Messenger.

An instant message with a smart tag underlining an email address.

Here’s How

  1. In the IM window, click the underlined email address, then select Invite to Messenger from the menu.

Click the smart tag and select Invite to Messenger from the menu.

The Add to Messenger List window opens.

  2. Complete the Add to Messenger List window and send the invitation. (Remind me how.)

What’s Next

The Import feature, Invite to Join feature, and email smart tags provide ways to easily invite people to join you in using Messenger. Invite all your friends and connect the way you want, when you want.

Words to Know

  • Smart tag: information, such as a phone number or email address, found in an instant message and underscored for your use. Clicking a smart tag allows you to act on the information, such as sending a text message to a mobile phone number, sending an email to an email address, or adding the information to your address book.
