Inviting One Friend

You can invite one friend at a time to join the community of Messenger users. This approach allows you to include a personal message along with the email that Yahoo! Messenger sends.

 

Here’s How

  1. In your Messenger window, select Invite People to Join from the Contacts menu.

    Select Invite People to Join from the Contacts menu.

    The Add to Messenger List window opens.

  2. In the Add to Messenger List window, enter an email address, then click the Next button.

    Tip: You can also invite your Windows Live™ Messenger contacts to IM with you without joining Yahoo! Messenger. Windows Live™ Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger contacts can IM without having to switch to a different Messenger application!

    Optionally, in this window you can also:

    • Change your name.

      Tip: The name you enter in these fields is the name your friend sees in the email invitation.

    • Enter a personal message.

    • Choose a language in which to write the invitation.

  3. In the final display of the Add to Messenger List window, click the Add Another Contact button to invite another friend or add a contact, or click the Finish button to complete the invitation process.

    Your friend receives the following email invitation.

    After your friend accepts your invitation, Messenger adds his or her Yahoo! ID to your Messenger List (and yours to theirs) and opens an IM window with the following options:

    The IM window displays options for the new contact.

    You can select an option or send an instant message to your new contact.

 

What’s Next

  • Contact: a person with whom you interact; someone to whom you might want to send an email or instant message.
  • Messenger List: a list of coworkers, friends, family, and associates who also use Messenger.
  • Smart tag: information, such as a phone number or email address, found in an instant message and underscored for your use. Clicking a smart tag allows you to act on the information, such as sending a text message to a mobile phone number, sending an email to an email address, or adding the information to your address book.

  • Yahoo! ID: the name by which a person is known to all Yahoo! networks.
