Creating a Group

Yahoo! Messenger makes your communication with contacts easier by letting you organize contacts into meaningful groups, each with a unique name. For example, you might create a Family group, a Party group, and a Work group. You can instant message any individual in a group, as well as the entire group. Yahoo! Messenger automatically includes the Friends group. Create groups as you need them, and add or remove contacts from your groups at any time.

Yahoo! Messenger provides two ways to create a group:

Here’s How

To create a group when adding a new contact:

  1. Begin by adding a new contact as described in the Adding Contacts to Your Messenger List tutorial.

  2. In the second page of the Add to Messenger List window, select the name displayed in the field beneath Choose or enter a Messenger List group for this person, then enter a new group name.

Select the current group name, then enter a new name.

  3. Complete the process of adding a contact.

After you’ve closed the Add to Messenger List window, Yahoo! Messenger creates the new group and displays it in your Messenger List along with the newly added contact.

The Messenger List displays the new group with the new contact name.

To create a group from your Messenger List:

  1. In your Messenger List, select an existing group, then right-click and select Create New Group from the displayed menu. You can also select Organize Messenger List > Create New Group from the Contacts menu.

The Create New Group window opens.

  2. In the Create New Group window, enter a group name, then click the OK button.

Enter a group name, then click the OK button.

Yahoo! Messenger adds the new group to your Messenger List. Note that this group does not yet contain contacts.

What’s Next

You can show the contacts in a group by clicking Right-pointing arrow next to the group name, and hide the contacts by clicking Down-pointing arrow. You can also double-click a group to show or hide its contacts.

You can add contacts to any group at any time and move them from one group to another.
