Introducing Yahoo! Messenger’s Call Features

What Are Messenger’s Call Features?Setting UpSelecting a RingtoneImporting a Ringtone

Importing a Ringtone for PC-to-PC Calls

You can import your own sound for Messenger to use as a ringtone when a PC-to-PC call comes through. Any sound file with a WAV extension can be used as a custom ringtone, including sound files you create yourself. For example, you could create a sound file using the Sound Recorded application that comes with Microsoft Windows.

Once you’ve created and saved the sound file, import the file into your list of ringtones in the Calling & Audio preferences in the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences window. You can then select the imported file as the default ringtone or assign it to a specific contact.

Tip: Yahoo! Phone In calls always use the default ringtone (called Ring Ring).

Here’s How

  1. Open your Messenger Preferences window and select the Calling & Audio category. (Remind me how.)

Tip: You can also access the Calling & Audio window by right-clicking a contact’s name and choosing Ringtone > Import From My Computer. This is handy when you want to assign a specific ringtone to a contact and need to import it first.

  2. In the Ringtone section of the Preferences window, click the Import button.

    Click the Import button.

The Import a Ringtone window opens.

  3. In the Import a Ringtone window, navigate to the directory containing your WAV file, select the file, click Play to hear the sound if desired, then click the Import button to copy the file into Messenger.

Tip: If you installed Messenger in the default location, the ringtones packaged with Messenger are stored in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media\RingTones.

Select the file, play the sound, then click the Import button.

After clicking Import, the Ringtones list updates to include your selected WAV file.

The list of ringtones includes the imported file.

You can now select this imported ringtone as your default ringtone or as the ringtone for a specific contact. (Remind me how.)

  4. Delete a ringtone that you no longer want to use by selecting it and then clicking Remove.

Select a ringtone, then click the Remove button.

Each ringtone corresponds to a WAV file stored on your hard drive. Removing a ringtone from the list does not remove the WAV file from your hard drive. This means that you can add the ringtone back later by clicking the Import button and navigating to the WAV file’s location.

Tip: If you installed Yahoo! Messenger in the default location, the ringtones packaged with Messenger are stored in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media\RingTones.
