Adding Contacts to Your Messenger List

Here’s How

1. In your Messenger window, select Import Contacts from the Contacts menu.

   The Import Contacts window opens with the Address Book and Microsoft Outlook options already selected.

2. Keep both options selected or click a box to deselect one, then click the Next button.

   

   Messenger checks your locations and displays two lists of people you can add to your Messenger List—people who already use instant messenger and people who you can invite to use Yahoo! Messenger.

3. By default, all of the people in the list of current instant messenger users are selected. De-select any names that you don't want to add to your list.

   

   All selected names will receive a notification that you would like to add them to your Messenger List.

4. In the list of people to invite, select the people you would like to invite to join you on Messenger.

   

   These people will receive an email inviting them to join you in using Messenger.

   Tip: Clicking the check box next to Select All under a list selects all of the people in the list.

5. To view the email invitation before you actually send it, click the View the Invitation button.

   

   The View the Invitation window opens with the text of the email message. Close it when you finish reading the text.

6. After selecting people, click the Next button.

7. In the next window, enter your name, if it’s not already entered for you, so your new contacts will know who is adding or inviting them, then click the Next button.

   

   Messenger sends requests to the current instant messenger users and sends email invitations to the people you chose to invite. Both the request and the invitation include your name.

8. In the Congratulations window, you can do any of the following by clicking the associated link:

   

   • Change your privacy settings—opens the Messenger Preferences dialog to the Privacy category, where you can change your privacy settings.

   • Change your message archiving settings—opens the Messenger Preferences dialog to the Archive category, where you can change your message archiving settings.

   • Fill out your contact details to share with others—opens the My Contact Details window where you can enter your personal contact information, such as your phone number, address, and Yahoo! ID. Later, you may want to share this information with your contacts.

   Note: Each task allows you to return to the Congratulations window.

9. Click the Finish button.

   Yahoo! Messenger displays the names of the current instant messenger users in a temporary state on your Messenger List. When contacts accept your request, their names become permanent on your list, and your name is added to their Messenger Lists. If contacts decline, Yahoo! Messenger sends you a notice and removes the names from your Messenger List.

   Yahoo! Messenger sends email invitations to those people who aren’t current Yahoo! Messenger users.
