Before placing or receiving a Yahoo! Messenger call, use the Video and Voice Setup feature to optimize your microphone, speakers, and camera (camera is optional).
The first time you attempt to make a call, a prompt will ask if you would like to go through the setup process before continuing with the call. After that, you can check your setup by selecting Open Video and Voice Setup in the Video & Voice Devices category of the Preferences window (Messenger > Preferences).

To set up your microphone in Step 1, select the microphone you’re using, then speak into your computer’s microphone to test its reception.

If Messenger detects your voice, the following message displays in the window:

If Messenger can’t detect your voice, the following message displays:

Answer the questions to help troubleshoot your microphone.
Click the Next button.
To set up your speakers in Step 2, select the speakers you’re using, then adjust the volume until you comfortably hear the music played by Messenger.

If you can hear the tune, click the Finish button.
If you remain in this window, the following message displays:

To check your camera in Step 3, select the camera you’re using, then adjust the camera’s focus until you’re satisfied with the image displaying in the setup window. The camera is optional and only needed if you want people to see your image during video calls.

Click the Finish button.
Now you’re ready to talk with your friends.
You can select the ringtone you’d like to hear for incoming calls.
