Receiving a Chat Message

When someone sends you a chat message, a green tab opens in the small chat window on the Mail page in which you’re working. To respond, just type in the message input box.

Tip: You must be on a Yahoo! Mail page to see the chat window. If you’re signed into Yahoo! Mail but viewing another page, such as the Contacts tab, you won’t see the chat window until you return to your Mail tab.

Here’s How

  1. Return to your Yahoo! Mail window if you aren’t already there.

  2. If necessary, click the tab of the person you want to chat with (you can have several chats going at once; each in its own tab). Unanswered chats have green tabs.

    Click the green tab.

The tab opens and you can begin chatting.

  3. Type your message in the message input box, then press the Enter key or click the Send button.

Type your message, the press Enter.

Your message appears in the conversation area.

Your message appears in the conversation area.

What’s Next

Want to ignore a contact’s chat invitation? Just close the tab or the chat window.

Close the tab or the window.

The contact won’t notice anything but will probably think you’re away from your computer. If you really don’t want to chat with this contact, you can take more permanent action. The Blocking Chat Messages task tells you how.
