You can chat with any contact who
has a Yahoo! ID or Windows Live™ ID and
who is signed into Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo!
Messenger, or a compatible instant messaging
application.
If the contact is in your Yahoo! Contacts and
online, you’ll see the person’s name in the Online Contacts List
in the Chat & Mobile Text area. You can chat with anyone in
you Online Contacts List. You can also chat with people who aren’t in
the List.

Notes:
You can chat with several contacts at the same time, each
in its own tab. It’s not possible for several people to chat together
in a single conversation.
You cannot use the chat feature inside Yahoo! Mail and
be logged into Yahoo! Messenger at the same time.
To chat with a contact from your Online Contact List:
Make sure that you’re available to chat within Yahoo! Mail. (Remind me how.)
If you don’t see your online contacts listed under Chat & Mobile Text, click the arrow next to Online Contacts to display them.

Click the name of the contact you want to chat with.

A chat tab opens in a small window on the bottom-right corner of the Mail page.

Type your message in the message input box,.

Add an emoticon if you like.
Click the emoticon button, then select an emoticon from the palette.


The code for the selected emoticon appears to the right of your text.

Press the Enter key or click the Send button to send your message.

Your messages and your contact’s replies appear in the conversation area.

To end your chat session close the tab (if there’s more than one) or the window.

To chat with someone who isn’t in your Online Contact List:
Make sure that you are available to chat within Yahoo! Mail. (Remind me how.)
Click the New Chat link in the Chat & Mobile Text area or select Chat from the New menu.

Type the Yahoo! email address of the person you want to chat with, then click the Chat button.

Tips:
Before you can chat with a Windows Live™ user, you need
to ask permission to add him or her to your Online Contacts List.

Some IDs have domains other than @yahoo.com, such as @ymail.com or
@hotmail.com. When typing these IDs, be sure to add the full domain
(person1@ymail.com, person@hotmail.com). You don’t need to type
the @yahoo.com domain
The message input becomes active. If the person isn’t in your Yahoo! Contacts, you can add the person from this window.

Type your message in the message input box, add a emoticon if you like, then press the Enter key or click the Send button.

Your messages and your contact’s replies appear in the conversation area.

To add a person to your Yahoo! Contacts from the chat window, do the following:
Click the Add link in the chat window.

The Add to Contacts window opens.
Complete the information in the Add to Contacts window, then click the Save button.

The person’s information is added to your Yahoo! Contacts, and if the person is online, you’ll see his name in your Online Contacts List on the left of the page.
