Creating a Category

Do you often send email to a group of contacts? Do you send email to that same group of contacts on a regular basis? If you answered yes to these questions, then you might want to group these contacts into a category so that you can easily send emails to the same group over and over. A category is a list of contacts in your Yahoo! Contacts. Use categories to:

  • Send the same email to more than one person at the same time.
  • Organize contacts for easier viewing.

You can create categories from the Add Category button and while adding or editing contacts.

Here’s How

To create a category using the Add Category button:

  1. Open Yahoo! Contacts. (Remind me how.)

  2. Click the Add Category button on the Contacts toolbar.

    Click the Add Category button.

    The category page opens.

  3. Type a name (up to 15 alphanumeric characters only, no spaces), then click the Save button.

Type a name, then click the Save button.

You can now add contacts to the category.

To create a category while adding or editing a contact:

  1. While adding or editing a contact, click Add (if the contact doesn’t belong to any category yet) or Change to the right of Categories on the contact’s card.

Click Add to the right of Categories.Click Change to the right of Categories.

  2. Type a new category name in the top box (up to 15 alphanumeric characters only, no spaces), then click the Done button.

Enter a name for the new category, then click Done.

The category is created when you save and includes the contact you were working with. Now you can add more contacts to the new category.

What’s Next

Think of the categories you create as “user defined” and the categories that come with Yahoo! Contacts as “system”. You can rename and delete user-defined categories, but you can’t rename or delete system categories.

System categories and user-defined categories

Here’s a brief description of system categories:

  • All Contacts—contains all the contacts in your Yahoo! Contacts whether or not they are assigned to other categories.
  • Connections—contains all the contacts with whom you have a connection.
  • Unfiled Contacts—contains the contacts that you haven’t assigned to a user-defined category.
  • Last Import—contains the last set of contacts that you imported.
  • Deleted Contacts—contains contacts that you’ve deleted before they’re permanently removed. Contacts remain in this category for up to one month, giving you time to restore those you didn’t mean to delete.

Words to Know

  • Connection: a person you spend significant time online with and with whom you want to share personal information. Connections have privileged access to each others’ profiles.
