Using the Add to Messenger List Window

When you know a person’s Yahoo! ID, Member ID, or Windows Live™ ID, you can add the person to your Messenger List using the Add to Messenger List window.

Here’s How

  1. In the Messenger window, click the Add a Contact at the bottom of the Contact List.

Click the Add a Contact button.

The Add to Messenger List window opens.

  2. In the Add window, type the contact’s Yahoo! ID, Member ID, or Windows Live™ ID.

Type the contact's ID, select a Network, then click the Next button.

    Tips:

Some IDs have domains other than @yahoo.com, such as @sbcglobal.net, @verizon.net, or @msn.com. When typing these IDs, be sure to add the full domain (person1@sbcglobal.net, person2@verizon.net, person3@msn.com). You don’t need to type the @yahoo.com domain.

Notice that the Network box updates automatically based on the ID you type. For example, if you type an ID ending in @hotmail.com or @msn.com, the Network changes to Windows Live (MSN).

The Network box updates automatically depending on the ID you type.

If the person doesn’t have a valid ID, type an email address and Messenger will send an email message inviting the person to use Messenger. For more information, see the Inviting Friends to Use Messenger tutorial.

  3. In the next window, do the following:

    • Select a group from the pull-down list or type a new group name.

      Select a group.

    • Type an optional introductory message.

      Type an optional introduction.

    • If you like, change how your name appears in the request that will be sent to this contact by clicking the Change button and typing a new name in the window that appears.

      Click the Change button.

    • Click the Next button.

  4. In the final display of the Add window, you can do any of the following:

Click a link to perform a task.

    • Send your contact details to this contact—lets you complete your contact information and send them to this contact. This feature isn’t available for Windows Live™ Messenger contacts.

    • Request contact details from this contact—sends a request to this contact asking for his or her contact information (you might get more information that you already have). This feature isn’t available for Windows Live™ Messenger contacts.

    • Associate this ID with an existing contact—merges the information you’ve supplied with a contact that already exists in your Yahoo! Address Book.

    • Add another contact to your Messenger List—returns you to the first page in the window so that you can begin adding another contact.

  5. Click the Finish button.

Messenger adds the contact’s name to your Messenger List in a pending state. If the contact accepts your request, the addition becomes permanent. If the contact declines, Yahoo! Messenger sends you a notice and removes the name from your Messenger List.
