You can use Yahoo! Messenger to communicate with anyone who uses Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Windows Live™ Messenger if you know the person’s Member ID, Yahoo! ID, or Windows Live™ Messenger ID. To take full advantage of Yahoo! Messenger—send instant messages, place PC-to-PC calls, play games—add people to your Messenger List where they are known as your contacts. Once a contact is on your Messenger List, you no longer need to remember his or her ID.

Tip: You can’t place PC-to-PC calls to or play games with your Windows Live™ Messenger contacts. These features aren’t supported.

Words to Know

  • Contact: a person with whom you interact; someone to whom you might want to send an email, instant message, or text message.
  • Instant messaging: the ability to exchange messages in real time with other people over the Internet.
  • Member ID: the name by which a person is known to the Yahoo! network.

  • PC-to-PC calling: the ability to call another person’s computer from your computer; similar to placing a phone call. Both you and the person you are calling must have a Messenger ID and be logged into Messenger.

  • Yahoo! ID: the name by which a person is known to all Yahoo! networks.
