You may have one or more address books with other services, such as Gmail or Windows Live Hotmail, or a desktop address book, such as Outlook. Using the Contact Import tool you can transfer contacts from these address books to your Yahoo! Contacts easily and securely; it even lets your friends know about your new Yahoo! email address.

Note: If you plan to use the import tool to transfer contacts from a desktop application, such as Outlook, you need to first create a .csv or .vcf file. Each application is different, so can check out our online help to see what you need to do for your desktop application.

Note: The Contact Import tool must have your old password to access the contacts in the old account. Once the process is completed, the password is discarded, never to be seen again. In other words, you’re perfectly safe.

  6. If you’re transferring contacts from a desktop application, such as Outlook, you must create a .csv or .vcf file. Learn more Once you’ve done that, you can check the box next to A desktop email program and provide the file location and name.

What’s Next

Finding your added contacts

The Contact Import tool imports your contacts into new categories in Yahoo! Contacts and gives each category a name that reflects the application from which the contacts were imported. For example, your Hotmail or MSN contacts will be in the MSN category and your GMail contacts will be in the GMail category. To view your imported contacts, click the View button above the contacts list and select one of the new categories.

Tip: When you import friends from Facebook, they are combined alphabetically with all of your contacts. You won’t find them in a special category.

New categories hold your imported contacts.

You can manage these contacts just as you do other contacts. You can add or move them into other categories, edit them, even delete them.

Cleaning up duplicate entries

Once you add contacts and import contact information from other applications, you may find that you have duplicate information. No problem, you can clean these up as shown in Cleaning Up Duplicate Contact Entries.
