Choose Keywords

Keywords are words or phrases that relate to the products and services you wish to advertise. You'll see the Choose Keywords page as you go through the process of creating a campaign or adding an ad group to a campaign. Use this page to specify keywords for your ad group. We can help by suggesting keywords. (If you have a list of keywords already, you can type or paste them into this page.) You can also add custom keyword settings for each keyword. (If you don't add custom settings now, you can select them later in the Keywords Details page.) However you specify your keywords, make sure they comply with Sponsored Search Editorial Guidelines.

Quick Summary

To complete this step:

  1. Open the Choose Keywords page.

  2. Do either - or any combination - of the following:

    • Find keywords. Use the Find Keywords panel to view a list of keywords to consider adding based on three or more descriptive words you enter, the content of a web page, and any words or phrases you want to include or exclude from the keywords. Then click the checkboxes for keywords you want to add and click Add Keywords.

    • Type or paste keywords. If you already know the keywords you want to use for this ad group, type them directly into the text box in the Selected Keywords panel.

  3. (Optional) Specify custom settings for the keywords in the Selected Keywords panel. You can enter custom keyword settings now, or add or change them later in the Keyword Details page. See Adding Custom Keyword Settings for details.

To open the Choose Keywords page:

Note: If you have more than one account, select the account from the dropdown list.

  1. Click the Campaigns tab. The Campaigns page opens.

  2. Click Create Campaign. The Create a Campaign page opens.

  3. Click the Get Started button and follow the onscreen steps to create a campaign and ad group name.

  4. Click the Next Choose Keywords button. The Choose Keywords page opens.

Getting Related Keywords

Use the Find Keywords panel to get possible keywords that relate to the products and services you want to promote. We'll provide you with keywords that may be relevant, based on the words you use to describe your products and services, the content of a page on your web site, and your lists of included and excluded terms.

To get a list of possible related keywords

  1. After navigating to the Choose Keywords page, look at the Find Keywords panel on the left side of the page.

  2. Enter keywords in the first field, words that describe your products and services. Enter at least one word or phrase. Put each word or phrase on a separate line. Once you've entered keywords in the first Find Keywords field, you can continue on to fill in some of the other fields in the Find Keywords panel, as described below.

  3. (Optional) Enter a URL from your web site. We'll search that web page to help us suggest some related keywords.

  4. (Optional) In the Specify Words That Must Appear in Each Keyword field, enter the words that need to be in each of the related keywords. Separate words with a comma. Put quotation marks around phrases of two or more words.

  5. (Optional) In the Specify Words That Must Not Appear in Keyword field, enter any words that must not be in any of the related keywords. Separate words with a comma. For instance, you may want to exclude the word free from any of the related keywords. Put quotation marks around phrases of two or more words.

  6. Click Get Keywords. The left panel redisplays a list of related keywords. To help you select keywords that fit your business goals, we also display the estimated monthly searches for each related keyword.

  7. Compare the search volume for the suggested keywords.

    • If your goal is to bring a large number of visitors to your web site, you may want to select more general keywords with a large number of searches.

    • If your goal is to increase conversions on a small budget, you may want to select more specific keywords that have a lower volume of searches. Note that these calculations are estimates only-- not guarantees.

  8. In the Choose Your Keywords panel, click the checkbox for each keyword you want for this ad group, and then click Add Keywords. The keywords you selected now appear in the Selected Keywords list in the right panel.

  9. (Optional) To get additional related keywords, click Refine This List. The Refine Keyword List dialog box displays, providing the current list of related keywords.

    • Click the Reject box for keywords that are not relevant for your business, or that you don't want us to use as related keywords in this step.

    • Click the Include box for keywords that are relevant to your business.

    • Click Get More Keywords to view additional keywords listed in the Find Keywords panel.

  10. (Optional) Repeat steps 8 and 9 to add keywords to the Selected Keywords list and to get more related keywords.

  11. To see how many keywords you've added so far, look at the Keywords Entered counter just above the Selected Keywords field.

Entering Keywords

You can enter keywords directly in the Selected Keywords panel by typing or pasting them into the text box. In either case, be sure that each keyword is no longer than 100 characters and that you enter each keyword on a separate line, without commas, semicolons, or other punctuation. You may include up to 500 keywords in this panel. To see how many keywords you've already added, look at the Keywords Entered counter just above the field.

Specifying Custom Keyword Settings

Regardless of how you select keywords, you can add custom settings for some or all keywords in the Selected Keywords panel. You can include the following custom settings for each keyword:

  • Custom bid

  • Custom URL

  • Alternate text

  • Match type (Advanced or Standard)
