Use the Ad Group Settings page to make changes to your ad group's general information, tactic settings, and optimization guidelines. You can also copy, move, or delete your ad group.

Understanding Ad Group Status

The ad group's status appears near the top of the Ad Group Settings page, showing the ad group's current status information and whether or not the ad group is active. Next to this status information is a button that you can click to take action on the current status. For more information on statuses, refer to the Statuses topic.

Note: If an ad group or its parent campaign is not active, then the title in the breadcrumb (the navigation path below the tabs at the top of the screen) appears in red text and the page background appears grayed out.

Viewing Ad Group Settings

You can view the settings for your ad group from the Ad Group Settings page.

To open the Ad Group Settings page

  1. Click the Campaigns tab and then the Ad Groups subtab. The Ad Groups page opens. (Alternatively, if you want to access ad groups under one specific campaign, you could click only the Campaigns tab. When the Campaigns page opens, identify the campaign in the table and click its link to open the Campaign Details page.)

  2. Click the name of the ad group. The Ad Group Details page opens.

  3. Click the Ad Group Settings link. This opens the Ad Group Settings page.

Ad Group General Information

General information about ad groups include:

  • Ad Group Name—Shows the name of your ad group.

  • Optimize Ad Display—Shows if ad optimization is on or off for ad groups that employ the Sponsored Search tactic. When turned on, the settings for ad group optimization guidelines apply.

  • Watch List—Shows whether or not the ad group is in your watch list.

To change the Ad Group General Information settings

Click Edit (located in the upper right corner of the Ad Group General Information panel).

Tactic Settings

The settings available for your Sponsored Search and Content Match tactics include:

  • Sponsored Search Ad Group Bid or Bid Limit, which apply as follows:

    • When campaign optimization is turned off, set a default "bid" for Sponsored Search keywords in this ad group. The bid is the most you are willing to pay for a click.

    • When campaign optimization is turned on, set a default "bid limit" for Sponsored Search keywords in this ad group. The bid limit defines the most you’ll allow the campaign optimizer to bid on your behalf.

You can override your ad group bid or bid limit for individual keywords.

  • Match Type—Choose the Standard or Advanced match type for your ad groups.

  • Content Match Ad Group Bid—When campaign optimization is turned off, set a default maximum bid for Content Match in this ad group. You can override your ad group bid limit for individual keywords.

Note: When campaign optimization is turned on, Content Match is turned off for all ad groups in the campaign.

To change the Ad Group Tactic settings

Click Edit (located in the upper right corner of the Ad Group Tactic Settings panel).

Ad Group Optimization Guidelines Settings

These settings define at the ad group level how you want to optimize:

  • campaigns (when campaign optimization is turned on), and

  • ads (when ad display optimization is turned on)

The settings only apply to ad groups that have Sponsored Search turned on.

By default, ad groups inherit the optimization guidelines you define for their campaign. What you can customize depends on both the campaign-level optimization type you’ve selected (Business Objective or Conversion Funnel) and your analytics settings for optimization.

Note: If you enable analytics and tag your web site, you can optimize for metrics like conversions and revenue. Impressions and click metrics are always available.
