Before you turn on optimization, use the Campaign Optimization Settings page (the first of three pages for setting up campaign optimization) to save a copy of your current campaign settings in a file and to download the file to your computer. If you turn off optimization later on, use this file to restore campaign settings to their original values.
Campaign optimization is designed to maximize the effectiveness of your spending based on guidelines you provide. The optimizer tries to meet your business values and performance goals by adjusting such settings as keyword bids, keyword status, corresponding match types, and daily spending limits. This way, you avoid wasting time using trial-and-error analysis to find your best-performing ads and the best way to spend your budget. The optimizer helps determine this for you.
To set up optimization, complete this three-step workflow:
In this page, optionally download your current campaign settings to your computer.
In the next page, turn on optimization, then define your monthly budget and campaign schedule.
In the third page, specify your optimization goals and guidelines.
Opening the Campaign Optimization Settings Page
You can only open the Campaign Optimization Settings page for a campaign that has optimization turned off. Make this determination by looking at the Daily Spending Limit field in the campaigns list.
To open the Campaign Optimization Settings page
Click the Campaigns tab.
In the campaign list, find a campaign where campaign optimization is turned off. Qualifying campaigns have a Daily Spending Limit like "Not Set" or a numeric value like 1000.00. If it says "Optimized," you cannot open the Campaign Optimization Settings page.
Click the name of the campaign you found in step 2. The Campaign Details page opens.
Under Campaign Performance, click Change to the right of the Campaign Optimization: Off label. The Campaign Optimization Settings page opens.
To download a campaign
Open the Campaign Optimization Settings page.
Click the Download Campaign link and select CSV. The File Download dialog box opens.
Click Save. The Save dialog box opens.
Select a location for the file and click Save.
When the download completes, click Next: Budget and Schedule to go to the next step. The Set Campaign Budget and Schedule page opens.
