Tracking URLs

A tracking URL is a bit of extra text at the end of the normal URL that indicates where the site visitor came from. With tracking URL’s enabled you can learn:
  • what search queries led them to your site
  • which keywords were matched to their searches
  • what match type was used
Regular URL Example
 http://www.electronics-planet.com/television

Tracking URL Example
http://www.electronics-planet.com/television/?OVRAW=Buy%20plasma%20television&? OVKEY=plasma%20television&OVMTC=advanced

The following table explains each portion of the tracking URL:

You may find it beneficial to monitor your web server logs along with Tracking URLs. Web server log files are created by a web server that record clicks from your web site visitors. Web servers have different methods for how web server logs are set up. Please check with your provider to find out how to access your web server logs.

Tracking URLs, combined with web server logs are an excellent method for tracking your results:
  • They’re free.
  • They’re easy to activate.
  • They’re designed to provide detailed information to advertisers who analyze their web server logs or third-party tracking solutions.
