What settings and plug-ins can I choose for WordPress?

WordPress activation includes a number of optional settings and plug-ins, small applications that can add features and functionality to your blog. If you choose the standard activation path, we will turn on the most popular settings and plug-ins by default, and choose a page theme for you. The custom path will allow you to select which items you would like to activate for your blog before you install WordPress.

No matter which activation path you choose, you will be able to modify available WordPress settings and plug-ins anytime from your WordPress control panel. Learn how.

The following options are available to all WordPress users. To learn more about other WordPress plug-ins, visit the WordPress plug-ins directory. Please note that Yahoo! does not provide technical support for WordPress, and that we cannot help you install any WordPress plug-ins other than those listed below.

Upgrade Method
We recommend that you upgrade your software whenever WordPress adds new features and other enhancements to its suite of tools. You can decide how you want to manage these updates: If you choose the standard activation path, we select the auto-upgrade feature for you; in a custom activation, you can decide between auto-upgrading or manually upgrading you software. (You can change your upgrade setting anytime from your Blog Manager.) Learn more.

Theme
Your theme describes the look and feel of your web site: its colors, text style, and basic layout. You can choose from among six themes during a custom activation; if you choose the standard path, we will select a default theme for you.

Plug-Ins

Akismet Spam Protection
The Akismet (short for Automattic Kismet) plug-in helps protect you from spammers who would use your blog as a tool for boosting their own search engine rankings. When you enable Akismet Spam Protection, comments and other information sent to your blog are sent to the Akismet service for analysis, and communications that appear to be spam are automatically blocked. You can also manually review the filtered messages to ensure that legitimate communications are getting through. Learn more on the Akismet web site. Please note that Akismet will be installed and activated by default when you activate a WordPress blog using the tools in your Web Hosting Control Panel.

BAStats
Learn more about activity on your blog by installing this plug-in, which tracks statistics for your entire blog, including hit and referrer counts, search engine phrase counts, and more. BAStats complements the basic site statistics reports you'll find in your Web Hosting Control Panel when you turn on Yahoo! Blog Statistics.

Customizable Permalinks
Help drive and retain traffic to your site with the Customizable Permalinks plug-in, which provides easily understandable, static web addresses (URLs) for your pages. Customized permalinks make it easier for your readers to bookmark and share your blog posts. Learn more about permalinks.

FAlbum
The FAlbum plug-in allows you to easily display your Flickr photo albums in your WordPress blog. Flickr's online tools allow you to upload, store, organize, and annotate your photos; FAlbum provides a way to post your Flickr photos directly in your blog. Learn more about Flickr and setting up FAlbum.

Hosted by Yahoo! Badge
This plug-in places a small "Hosted by Yahoo!" badge on your blog pages, letting your visitors know that you're as proud to be a part of the Yahoo! Web Hosting community as you are to be part of WordPress. Your viewers can click on this badge to learn more about Yahoo! Web Hosting.

Subscribe2
Enabling the Subscribe2 plug-in allows you to notify your readers via email whenever you update your blog with a new post. Your site visitors will be able to sign up to receive your update notices, and you can use Subscribe2 to configure an email template, category lists, and more.

Important: Due to Yahoo! spam and fraud controls, you will be able to send emails with Subscribe2 only if your WordPress administrator email address matches your domain, such as you@widgetdesigns.com. Email addresses that don't match your domain, such as you@yahoo.com, will prompt an error message, and your emails will not be sent.

You'll be prompted to enter an email address when you install WordPress the first time; to change your administration email address anytime thereafter, visit the "Users" section of your WordPress console. Learn more about managing your blog.

WP-Cache
Enabled by default when you activate your blog, the WP-Cache plug-in improves the performance of your blog by storing (caching) WordPress page information in a static file. When your site visitors access your blog, WordPress retrieves your content from this static file rather than recompiling and building your pages from your blog database, speeding response time. You can modify your cache settings and enable or disable the plug-in anytime from your WordPress control panel.

WP-DB Backup
This plug-in makes it easy to create and save copies of the database that supports your WordPress blog. WP-DB Backup will create backups of your standard database tables (including, among other data, your categories, posts, and user information) plus any additional tables you choose, then allow you to download or even email yourself the backup file with the click of a button. In conjunction with the Snapshot Backups feature included with your Web Hosting plan, the WP-DB Backup plug-in can help ensure the security of your blog data.

Note: If your blog (and therefore your WordPress database) is extremely large, you may find that you run out of PHP memory or server disk space before your database backups are complete. To learn more about backing up very large WordPress databases, please see the WordPress Codex.

Yahoo! Blog Statistics
Enabling Yahoo! blog statistics allows you to collect and view basic statistics, including page views, visitor profiles, and referrers, for your WordPress blog. With a Yahoo! Web Hosting or Merchant Solutions plan, you can review all of your site statistics reports, including those for your blog, on your Web Hosting Control Panel. Learn more about site statistics.

Note: Web Hosting's Site Statistics will reflect activity only on your blog home page. For more in-depth statistics about each page of your blog, we recommend also enabling the BAStats plug-in.

Yahoo! RSS Feed
You can drive traffic to your site by submitting your blog's RSS feed to Yahoo!'s RSS database (this option will be turned on by default). Submitting your feed can help strengthen your relationship with current readers, who will be able to track your latest postings, while attracting new viewers, who can search Yahoo! for blog feeds like yours and easily add your blog to their My Yahoo! pages. Learn more about RSS.

Yahoo! Search Box
Activating this plug-in adds Yahoo! Search to your blog pages. Your site visitors will be able to use this tool to search the Web directly from your site.
