What are cookies?

A cookie is a small amount of data that can be transmitted by a web server to your browser when you visit a web site. Web sites use cookies to "remember" details about you, such as your user name or site preferences, in order to personalize your experience on that web site. Yahoo!, for example, uses cookies to remember your personal information, allowing us to display customized content such as My Yahoo! (learn more). Your browser will transmit information back to the site each time you view that site until the cookie expires.

You can set your browser's preferences to accept or reject cookies or notify you when a cookie is set. Your computer generally stores a cookie as a small text file that the server can recover if you return to that web site later; other cookies are temporary and allow the server to remember information about you only until you close your browser.

Site Statistics can set one of these "session cookies" to track when a visitor arrives at your site so you can generate unique page views data. (Please note that because this information is not written on to your visitor's computer, the tracking will end when that visitor restarts his browser.) To receive unique page views statistics for a page, you must place a counter on your page and enable the use of cookies during the counter setup. This feature is not currently available with Site Solution.
