How can I update files with FTP?

Need to update a file you already uploaded to your account? No problem.

Replace the File

First edit the file (an image, web page, or other document) on your computer. You'll replace the file in your account with this edited version.

Tip: Don't have a copy of the file saved on your computer? Go ahead and download it from your Web Hosting account with FTP!

When you're ready to replace the file in your account, go ahead and use your FTP tool to connect to your account, then upload the file from your computer. Learn how.

To replace the existing file, your new file must have the exact same name (including the file extension, such as .jpg or .html). Your FTP tool will generally ask if you want to overwrite the current file. Choose "Yes" or "OK" to update the file in your account.

Edit Online

Many FTP tools also include an "Edit" feature that allows you to edit a file and save your changes in your Web Hosting account. Generally these tools work by saving a temporary copy of the file to your own computer, then opening the file in a default or other program that you specify (for example, it might open a word-processing document in Microsoft Word or Notepad, depending on your tool settings). When you're finished editing the file, the tool saves the edited version in your account.

Because this process involves a lot of file transferring, it can take quite a while even on computers with fast Internet connections. For efficiency's sake, and because we encourage all users to keep copies of their web site files on their own computers as backups, we recommend replacing out-of-date files rather than editing with your FTP tool (see above).
