How do I activate a subweb?

With FrontPage, you can turn directories in your site into subwebs, which means you can assign others the ability to access those directories' files and publish to them. This protects your own user name and password and your root directory and also makes it convenient for others to author web pages for you.

When you activate FrontPage, you'll create a default author who can modify only to the root web (or "top-level site," in FrontPage 2003), the highest-level directory of your site. To allow publishing in subdirectories, you must activate subwebs.

When you activate a subweb, you enable FrontPage publishing in a subdirectory of your site, installing essential extensions just like you did when you activated FrontPage publishing the first time. Learn more.

You do not need to make every directory in your site a subweb. You should activate only those directories in which you plan to publish files with FrontPage.

To activate a subweb:

1. From the Create & Update tab of your Web Hosting Control Panel, click "FrontPage."

2. Click the "Manage Site" link.

3. Next to "View by," select "site directories" to see the complete list of your existing site directories (this list will include any subwebs you've already created or activated).

4. Locate the directory you'd like to activate and click the corresponding "Activate" link (you'll see this link only next to unactivated directories).

5. To complete the activation, you'll need to assign at least one author to this subweb. Select an existing author from the pull-down menu or add a name and password for a new author.

6. Click "Activate" to save your work and activate this subweb.

Note: Existing subdirectories of the directory you activated will remain only directories; they do not become subwebs just because the parent directory is now a subweb. Please be aware also that folders inside a parent subweb do not inherit its authors. You can create a subweb within a subweb and define completely different authors for each.

You can create new subdirectories anytime in your File Manager and activate them by following the steps above. To create and activate subwebs more quickly, we suggest using the FrontPage console's "Create subweb" feature. Learn how.
