Setting up Tax Rates in the Tax Wizard

Merchants who are not open for business will need to complete the Tax Setup task in order to open for business. Merchant will first choose whether or not they are required to collect tax and then for those that are required, you can set up tax rates in the wizard.

To set up tax rates in the Tax Wizard:

  1. From the Open for Business control panel, click the Set up Tax Rates link.
  2. Click Start Tax Wizard.
  3. Select the "I am required to collect tax" option and click Next.
  4. Select the state(s) where you are required to collect tax and click Next. The Tax Wizard will create base state tax rates for the selected state(s).
  5. Review and edit the rule for the base state rate if you need to add any additional county, city, or special district tax.
  6. Click Finish.

If you need to set up additional tax rates, you can either return to the State selection page to create a base state tax rate, or click Add New Rule to create a tax rate based on a location (state, province or region, or zip or postal code) and rate (flat or percentage).

Note: When adding a rule from the Review page of the Tax Wizard, a default tax rate is not specified. Rates are only pre-filled when you select a state on the previous page of the wizard.

When you open for business, your tax rates will be published. You can use the Shipping and Tax test, available after you open and linked from the Store Manager in the Order Settings column, to test the tax rates you have set up. After opening, you will then manage your tax rates by clicking the Tax Rates link in the Order Settings column of the Store Manager.

Note: Yahoo! is unable to provide tax advice to merchants for determining your tax requirements based on your location(s) and products. Due to the financial and legal implications surrounding tax requirements, Yahoo! strongly recommends merchants consult a small business tax advisor for determining the exact tax rates applicable to your store.
