How do I lookup information for an IP address?

The IP Blocking feature allows you to perform reverse DNS lookup on individual IP addresses. The Reverse DNS Lookup section will display the following fields:

  • IP Address
  • Country
  • Organization Name
  • City
  • State/Province
  • Zip/Postal
  • Service Provider
  • Tech Handle Email
  • Tech Handle Phone

Note: While the Reverse DNS Lookup field will display these fields, some fields may not contain information due to the differences in naming between the four registries (ARIN, APNIC, LATNIC, RIPE). If you wish to collect the full information for an IP address, click the "see complete whois information" link. A popup window will display the full information from the registrar (see figure 1).

To lookup information for an IP address coming from the Order Manager:

  1. From the individual order review page, click the IP address link appearing below the order number (see figure 1).
  2. The information for the IP address will appear in the Reverse DNS Lookup Summary section. You can also click the "see complete whois information" link to get all available information for the IP address from the registrar.
  3. Review the information for possible signs of fraud.
  4. Block the IP address if you wish to prevent further orders from the IP address.

Note: It is only possible to lookup information for an individual IP address, not a range of IP addresses.

To lookup information for an IP address from the IP Blocking page:

  1. From the Store Manager, click the "Risk Tools" link under Order Settings.
  2. Click the IP Blocking link.
  3. Click the "Lookup" button to get reverse DNS lookup information for the IP address. You can also click the "see complete whois information" link to get all available information for the IP address from the registrar.
  4. Review the information for possible signs of fraud.
  5. Block the IP address if you wish to prevent further orders from the IP address.
Note: Yahoo! provides the IP address blocking feature as is and without warranty of any kind to Yahoo! Merchant Solutions and Store merchants to be used at the merchants' discretion. Merchants should carefully review the Reverse DNS Lookup information provided before blocking any IP address, as IP addresses may be dynamically assigned to users by certain Internet Service Providers possibly blocking legitimate buyers and not ensuring the fraudster is blocked from ordering. Also, as IP addresses may be falsified, merchants are advised to use AVS and CVV responses to determine which orders to approve, reject, or follow up with the issuing bank.
