Collecting Catalog Requests

Merchants using Store Editor 3.0 templates

Merchants using Store Editor 3.0 templates can choose to link to their Catalog Request form by adding a link to their main product navigation, or by adding a link using any variable that accepts HTML input (for example, the HTML-below-left-nav variable for merchants using templates with side navigation, or the Final-text variable).

Add a link to your main product navigation

You can add a Catalog Request link to your side navigation links using the "Link" feature in Store Editor.
  1. In Store Editor, click on the "Link" section of the Editor toolbar.
  2. Enter a name for your link in the Name field. For example, "Request a catalog".
  3. Enter the URL for the link. The URL for your store's Catalog Request is formatted as follows:

    http://order.store.yahoo.net/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?store_ID

For example, if your store ID was 111222, your link would look like this:

    http://order.store.yahoo.net/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?111222

  4. If you'd like to, enter a description of the link in the Abstract field (optional).
  5. Click the Update button. Your link will be added to your store's main product navigation.
  6. Publish your changes.

Add a link to another area of your store pages

You can also add a link to your Catalog Request form to another area of your page, using a variable field that accepts HTML. For example, if your store uses a side navigation template, you may wish to place a Catalog Request link below your side navigation using the HTML-below-left-nav variable. If your store doesn't use a side navigation template, you may wish to place the link in another variable field that accepts HTML (for example, the Final-text variable). To create a link in one of these fields, you must format your link using the HTML "a" tag.

For this example, we'll use the HTML-below-left-nav variable. To add a link to this field:

  1. In Store Editor, click on the "Variables" section of the Editor toolbar.
  2. Locate the HTML-below-left-nav field, in the Page Properties section.
  3. Enter your Catalog Request link in this field, hard-coded in HTML using the "a" tag. Catalog Request forms created in Checkout Manager use the following link format:

    http://order.store.yahoo.net/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?store_ID

For example, if your store ID was 111222, and you wanted to create an HTML link to your Catalog Request form using "Request a catalog" as linked text, your link would be formatted like this:

    <a href="http://order.store.yahoo.net/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?111222">Request a catalog</a>

  4. Once you've inserted the HTML link into the HTML-below-left-nav field, click the Update button. You can now preview the Catalog Request link on your store pages
  5. Publish your changes.

You may wish to create a link to your Catalog Request form using an image, rather than text (see Figure 3). For this example, we'll use the HTML-below-left-nav variable.

To add a link to this field, using an image:

  1. If you haven't already uploaded an image, you can upload one using the "Files" section of Store Editor (Advanced mode). Click the "Files" section of the Advanced Editor toolbar.
  2. Click the "Upload" button.
  3. Choose an image to upload. Once you've chosen an image and entered a file name that the image will use, click the "Send" button.
  4. Once your image is uploaded, you will see it in your file list. Record the location of this image to reference it in your image link.
  5. Go to the Variables section of Store Editor, and locate the HTML-below-left-nav field.
  6. Enter your Catalog Request link and image in this field, hard-coded in HTML. Make sure to wrap the "img" tag with an "a" tag. For example:

    <a href="http://order.store.yahoo.net/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?111222"><img src=http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/111222/catalog.gif alt="Request a catalog" border="0"></a>

In this example, you'd replace "111222" with your Store ID.

Remember to include an alternate text description of your image. If you don't want a border to appear around the edges of the image when it's linked, include the image attribute border="0" in your "img" tag.

  7. Click the Update button. You can now preview the Catalog Request image and link on your store pages.
  8. Publish your changes.

Merchants using Store Editor 2.0 Templates

You can include the Catalog Request form in your site by including the "Request" button in your site's navigation buttons. Visitors clicking the "Request" button will be taken to a page where they can enter their name, address, and comments and request a catalog, join the mailing list, or sign up to receive other information. You can customize the catalog request form to collect customer information or interests for use in marketing programs (though you will want to disclose how you will use the information collected in your privacy policy).

To change your site's navigation buttons, you can use the "Buttons" field on the Edit page for your home page and the "Nav-buttons" field on the Variables page for the rest of your site.

  1. From the Store Manager, click the "Store Editor" link.
  2. Click the "Edit" button in the Editor toolbar.
