Calculating Shipping

You can configure your store to automatically calculate tax and shipping when an order is placed. From the Order Settings menu, click "Shipping Manager" and then "Shipping Rates" to create or edit shipping rules.

You should test your calculations before publishing them. After you have created and published your rules, click "Shipping & Tax Test" from the Shipping Manager. You can enter the relevant information from example orders, and make sure the calculation matches what you expect.

After you are in the Ship Rates area, you can click "Add Rule" to create a new shipping rate. There are five steps to creating a shipping rate:

  1. Select the location.
  2. Select the method.
  3. Select the rule type.
  4. Set the rates.
  5. Set whether the rule applies as an override.

If you already have shipping rules set up and you want to modify them, click "Edit" next to the rate you would like to modify.

Selecting the type of rule:
(If you are editing an existing rule, the type will already be set.)

Several different ways of calculating tax and shipping are available, as follows:

  • Rate table -- A shipping table can be based on the cost (before or after tax), number of items, weight, or number of shipments.
  • Flat rate charge -- Adds a specified amount for matching address regions. This method can be used to add a dollar value per pound, per item, or per shipment.
  • Percentage -- Adds a percentage of the amount (before or after tax).
  • UPS Real-time Rates -- Uses UPS shipping tables that are built-in to Yahoo! Store. Merchants must register to use UPS Online Tools® and must add and select an official UPS Shipping Method to use UPS Real-Time Rates.

Selecting the area the rule applies to:
This is a very powerful set of options because it allows you to limit what orders a rule will apply to by shipping address or shipping method. Here are the available fields and how to use them.

  • Country -- You can determine which countries a rule will apply to by setting this to "Inside" or "Outside" of the countries you select. Or simply set it to "Anywhere" to have it apply to all countries. (To select more than one country at a time, Windows users should hold down the Control key. Macintosh users should hold down the Apple key.)
  • State -- If you don't want this rule to apply to all states, simply enter the state abbreviations that you do want it to apply to. Otherwise you can leave it set to "Any."
  • ZIP code -- You can enter one ZIP code, one ZIP code prefix (e.g., 89 matches all ZIP codes starting with 89), or you can enter a range (e.g., 894-896). You can only enter one ZIP code, one prefix, or one range per rule. If you need to enter more than one of any or a combination, you will have to make separate rules.
  • Shipping method -- You can set this to apply to all shipping methods or only one. So if you have three methods and you want the charge to be $5 on 2 of them and $10 on the last, you have to set a separate rule for all three.

When you are done with this, you'll move on to selecting the charge. The instructions for this are different depending on which type of rule you selected. Please choose the type you would like to learn about:
