A subdomain is a useful way to create a memorable web address or send your site visitors to a specific area of your web site. (Sorry, subdomains are available only in Web Hosting and Merchant Solutions plans.)
Create Simpler Web Addresses
You could create a subdomain called http://info.widgetdesigns.com, for example, and point this subdomain to a directory called http://www.widgetdesigns.com/information/. Rather than telling your readers to visit your information pages at the longer, harder-to-remember web address, then, you could publicize the simpler subdomain http://info.widgetdesigns.com. Both http://info.widgetdesigns.com and http://www.widgetdesigns.com/information/ will send your readers to the same page.
Combine with Domain Forwarding
Subdomains are also an elegant way to manage a stand-alone domain name. If you have a Domains or Business Email plan, you can combine the domain forwarding feature available in those plans with subdomains in your Web Hosting or Merchant Solutions plan to direct your visitors to your Yahoo!-hosted web site.
For example, you might have purchased an additional domain for a Yahoo! web site you created, and set up forwarding so that domain, http://www.widgetdesigns.com, points to the home page of the site, at http://www.yourotherdomain.com. With a subdomain, you can redirect users to areas of your site other than your home page. You could create the subdomain http://info.widgetdesigns.com, for example, that forwards users to a subdirectory of your site, such as http://www.yourotherdomain.com/information/.
Personalize
You can even use a subdomain to personalize areas of your web site for your friends or colleagues. You might have created a directory of your site, http://www.widgetdesigns.com/eric/, for your friend Eric, for example. To further personalize Eric's space, you might create a subdomain — http://eric.widgetdesigns.com, for example — for that subdirectory. Eric will be able to tell his readers to visit his pages at either http://www.widgetdesigns.com/eric/ or http://eric.widgetdesigns.com.
Important: Please note that you can point a subdomain only to a Yahoo!-hosted web site. Currently subdomains may reference only a main directory (www.widgetdesigns.com) or a subdirectory one level down (www.widgetdesigns.com/subdirectory1/). You cannot point a subdomain to a subdirectory within a subdirectory (www.widgetdesigns.com/subdirectory1/subdirectory2/).
